    Attempting a motor rebuild

Yup take the edge down a very tiny bit. If for some reason you decide to take the carb and reeds of to access the roller bearings, make sure you count them and if your reinstalling them use bearing assembly grease and stay away from using a magnet. prolonged magnet use will magnetize the...

1996 force 120 intermittent idle issue and hard to start

Cough: backfire or stutter/miss or kickback through the carb. The fuel leak is normal. The carbs have fuel left in them and when tilted the fuel leaves the bowl and finds it's way to the well. The thermo at 110d shouldn't really make much difference other than using more fuel. An engine running...

1996 force 120 intermittent idle issue and hard to start

First step: do a compression and spark test. Looking for the comp to be even on all 4 or real close and the spark to be strong and clear. The actual comp #s varies due to the difference in tools, Cheapo tools= poor results. Harbor Freight tester = low results. Check the fuel pump diaphragm...

    No fire on either cylinder

Shouldn't need to be timed unless you move or change the trigger. Outboards don't "jump time" like an auto can. What to watch out for is the timer adjustment rod/connector can crack and move when accelerating.

    557ha

Backfire or sneeze can be it's sucking air someplace? You say it runs for a second? does it run good for that second or just barely runs. I'd check the fuel pump diaphragm. #5 should be a solid sheet of rubber. Any tears or holes will make it run like crap.

    No fire on either cylinder

Glue the magnet back in. You'll need to clean the magnet and the flywheel REALLLY good!!! Use a thin hard drying glue, or super glue. You might have to sand the magnet and take a couple thousands off so it fits good.

    No fire on either cylinder

Hope you can understand this?? Need to figure out the model? Figure out the model and testing gets easier. Testing the stator. Troubleshooting No fire on any cylinder: 1. Check the resistance from each blue to the yellow wires, you should read approximately 300 ohms. 2. Check the resistance...

Are Chrysler motors junk and to be avoided?

What got me was I took my truck in for a "tune up" Got the bill and saw the labor was twice what it should have been?? They had a trainee handing the tech parts so they charged me double labor. I questioned the boss and he said the trainee has to learn??? I fixed that. Paid with a check and...

Are Chrysler motors junk and to be avoided?

I started working as a new boat prep/rigger in 1986. I thought that was the best job I ever had. Loved it and my fix it myself attitude really came to the front. Now with the video's on the net you can just about fix anything. Still like tinkering with outboards the most.

Are Chrysler motors junk and to be avoided?

I've had Forces for over 30 years and went to a single Mercury EFI 225 Should have stuck with the Forces. Friends Yamaha with Direct Injection(??) (bought used) ended up costing thousands to get running and stay that way. I live in Florida and any Force found here is probably salt damaged. $$$$$

Can I swap factory tilt/trim from Mercury version 85hp to US Marine version 85?

A year?? Wow!! Thanks for the update. Have you done a compression test? Do a Starting Fluid test. Start motor, spray SF around the intake side of the motor. If the spray makes any difference in the way it runs then it's sucking air somewhere????
