85 HP force motor. 2 questions!

You check the rpm's at wide open? The wrong prop will kill ya at the gas pump. The wrong pitch will cause excessive fuel use and bad performance. I had twin 88/85's with 17p and got 3.2- 3.5 mpg. I wanted MORE!!! speed. Changed to 19p props and got more. 2-3 mph. and about 20-25% more fuel usage

Need help pulling gear carrier on Force 125 hp

Don't need to remove the lower to remove the carrier. But why are you removing it in the first place? But to do anything else you'll need to drop the unit. Drain the oil first.

Troubleshooting water pump issue on force 85

Most times not enough pressure from the hose or not deep enough in a bucket. Taping in place will help too.

How to take out rounded drain plug on force 85? Is there a way to drain without taking it out? Like pumping out the fluid maybe?

Easy out. Drill the plug, insert the easy out and a bit of heat will loosen the sealer around the threads.

1990 Force 120HP #2 Cyl zero compression and upon opening piston shows damage

Probably need to go to .020 piston and rings. .010 rings don't fit good on a .020 piston. Buying another Force?? If they've been maintained right then they will last as long as any other motor. Proper maint. is the key. I had 4 88/85hp. They had over 2k hours and the transom gave out from salt...

    Weak spark

You try running it with the weak spark? It might be all you need?? 3days ago I was getting a 9.9 Nissan running and had a spark tester hooked up and had no spark. When i first tried to start it coughed and sputtered like it had spark. So hooked it all back up and the "no spark" started the...

Need help pulling gear carrier on Force 125 hp

Regular puller with 2 pieces of 1/4-20 or 5/16 all thread. Clean the small holes/threads before trying. Then make sure they go in at least 1/4-1/2 in. in before attempting to pull. Salt water can make it difficult to pull, might need propane torch. Did you pull the slotted screw thinking it's a...

1990 Force 120HP #2 Cyl zero compression and upon opening piston shows damage

Called a stand pipe, used to keep excess water out of the motor housing. The mid section/rear/bottom has 2 holes that when just setting in the water and not moving they keep the water at the right level. #25 in #47 #47 you can't see the holes (2) because the cover is turned wrong. Just glue...

    40hp shearing flywheel keys?

Don't know where your finding your parts but every Force/Chrysler I've ever worked on had that nut with the nylon keeper in it. I guess you could double nut it after you've torqued it?? Shouldn't need Loctite on the taper if you have the right nut.

    40hp shearing flywheel keys?

VERY!!!! IMPORTANT!!!!! The nylon in the Nyloc nut has expanded and won't hold like it should. You can try heating it up but you can also cook the top seal when you do. Good chance it won't ever hold again.

    Water in lower unit oil?

It looks like a small amount of water's in there. Nordin, not all oils turn brown, his looks blue so I doubt it would turn brown. Like Racer suggested pressure test. Might help if you mention the year, model of the motor?? My twin 1988/85's all 4 would weep around the drain plug.

    40hp shearing flywheel keys?

Get a NEW flywheel nut. In extreme cases you can use a BIG screwdriver placed in the bendix and the flywheel teeth to hold it in place.

1990 Force 120HP #2 Cyl zero compression and upon opening piston shows damage

From my experience an outboard's just an outboard. If you can rebuild one then the job won't be so bad. Dismantle and do an inspection. Any doubt then replace the part. New pistons and rings. Wiseco is my choice. Good luck, keep us posted.

1972 Chrysler 85, Tolletson carburetor tuning

Possible the intake side's got bad gaskets on one or more port covers?? Set it where it runs and then take a can of starting fluid and spray around the intake side of the motor. That includes the bases of the carbs and the port covers and anywhere it might suck air?? If the spraying makes a...
