That looks to me like its being blown rearward from the top of the air box. The 2 screws for the top carb appear to be missing from the air box ,Im wondering how long they are ๐

Unfortunately not that uncommon a sight, part of the learning curve , although in your case a surprise attack .
Im thinking that your not always running on all cylinders (can be hard to tell sometimes ). I would check the spark plugs (remove and short to block to see if they are all sparking ), and drain float bowls to check for water.

If I have to buy a gasket I usually scan them and store the data , later I can put gasket paper...
Yeah ,I get that , split pin is for retaining nuts etc not for transfering torque . A cotter pin ,in this instance transfers the drive to the prop and is a solid pin , maybe brass with a plastic prop, but a lot more substantial than a split pin .

Some outboards have another water inlet on the underside of the cav plate , mine does and if I dont tape over it it looses enough water to stop the muffs working .
Water pressure here is set at 24 psi and at the end of the 20m hose I get 16 l/min ( had to check it for the waterblaster/pressure...
