    Stupid me, no oil

You really have to spray them with Corrosion X every few years. I’ve been doing that and my 1988 4.3 still has the original pan & it’s been kept on a salt water mooring for 20 seasons 5/6 months each season.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Power valve is supposed to open at a specified vacuum level and enrich the fuel mix. Head over to Holley.com there are many videos & info on how these carbs work. Probably 85% of all the carbs on Hot Rods & many classic cars are Holleys because they are a standard design modular carb in...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

OP has a simple Holley 2bbl not the EFI. I’d prob go thru the carb again & carefully clean the jets, passages & air bleeds. Replace all gaskets & install a new accel pump diaphragm

    Stupid me, no oil

Just thought of another thing Does this engine have the dipstick that hooks up to the drain plug in the pan? If so, there is supposed to be a rubber plug where the normal dipstick would go. If this rotted out or fell out you’d lose a LOT of oil! Starboard side of the block right at the bottom...

    Stupid me, no oil

I just saw a super powerful black light on South Main Auto’s you tube. Put some dye in the oil & it will be obvious!

    Cracked intake manifold

Is this a ‘96 and up Vortec? I recall reading that these had a drain plug in the front of the intake that has to be pulled to avoid freeze damage. Not present on the older pre Vortec engines…

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

My plan for that is to make it easier; next engine closed cooling & remote oil filter mount. These changes will eliminate the need for me to remove the rear seats & wood frame just to do an oil change & pull the block drain plugs. And, what’s the biggest boat you can get that will be fast enough...

Why I'm nervous boating at night...

Half the boaters here either don’t know, and don’t respect right of way rules, speeding across channels etc. At night? Not for me! That and lobster pot bouys can really ruin your day. We don’t get much debris in the water but the other factor you should keep in mind is as you age your night...

5.7GL (LK) IMPELLER and GASKET MAKER ??

Ahh, posted too fast, that 1997 is different than mine, it has the Volvo style pump on the engine, I don't know about those, only the 86-93 models with the impeller on the tail end of the upper gear housing.

5.7GL (LK) IMPELLER and GASKET MAKER ??

That o ring can shift when installing eve when using what OMC said to use (gasket sealer) I use triple guard grease to hold it in place instead. Check for water leaks around the housing after installing when running on the hose.

    Outdrive Maintenance

Even if not water in the bellows flex the pivot housing upward & look between the folds of the bellows and with a bright flashlight look for cracks. If you see ANY replace it. I usually get 10 years out of them before the cracks start. That’s a sign that the rubber is getting stiff and prone to...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Having to give it a bit of throttle is totally normal all my carbed US cars were like that. The high speed miss could be a bit of crud anywhere in the fuel system, anti siphon, fuel pick up tube (if this has a screen on it they can clog) carb needle valve, sticking float etc…. Also might check...

    Tips On Replacing Starter

I did the heavy Delco style starter one handed on my 4.3 2x over the years, you could lay a 2x4 across the gunnels and tie a line to the wood and then use that to tie up the starter to hold it while you get the bolts started. The PMGR are like half the weight. Make sure you use the correct...

    Stupid me, no oil

I have two mixes of 2 stroke fuel, one for all the Echo stuff and Husky chain saw (air cooled 2 stroke oil) and the other for the Toro 2 stroke 5 hp snow blower, that gets TCW-III as per Toro. Pennzoil Syn TCW-III. These run cooler and slower than typical air cooled 2 strokes so the theory is...
