best place to get reman 5.7 mercruiser

So it looks like the only GM 5.7 is the vortec, are they discontinuing them too at some point? Mine is a 96 pre vortec with the roller cam and 12 bolt intake. Kinda looks like that engine would only be available as a reman, or the Dart with flat tappet lifters. which probably isn't a huge deal...

best place to get reman 5.7 mercruiser

You are probably right about a local machine shop, but the one I called yesterday was about 10 weeks out, and I probably could buy the ATK from Jegs at the same cost or maybe cheaper. But then the reviews for ATK are probably the worst I have seen. I guess I should check a different machine shop...

Wondering where the best place to buy a remanufactured 5.7 engine would be. Reading the reviews of some of the companies, its like every other engine they sell are bad when the customer gets them, who can I trust to build a decent engine? I was checking out Engines Direct on ebay and their...

New transom installed but outside of transom is not flat

PBed new transom wood in, but now outside of transom is not flat. Looks like about .100 almost an 1/8 inch, in middle of keyhole going vertical. Now what, do I have to grind all the gel coat off and fill with fiberglass, then new gel coat.

PB'ing new transom wood to boat

Thanks guy’s I will definitely get my clamping setup, and test before starting. Maybe I should make 2 smaller batches then, I have heard about it getting hot in the bucket. Looked like friscoboater did it in one big bucket, guess if you get it spread out quickly maybe. But probably better to...

PB'ing new transom wood to boat

Ok I think I found my answer, came across an old thread where Woodonglass describes how to make peanut butter and when and where he uses it. Now I just have to figure out how much to mix up, to cover the hull and transom. looked like Frisco used around 3 quarts?

PB'ing new transom wood to boat

I've been reading and watching different threads and youtube videos and I'm not sure if I should use 1/4" chop strand fibers in my peanut butter for gluing the transom wood to the back of the boat. It looked like Friscoboater used fibers in his PB for the transom. Not sure if todhunter did and...

    Cracking in peanut butter

No I didn’t notice any cracking in the fillets. I put a lot more cabosil in to do the fillets. Does that keep the heat and shrinking down, with more cabosil in the mix? Would you recommend drilling the holes back out, and start over with a thicker mix?

    Cracking in peanut butter

I drilled all my holes in my transom oversized and filled them with my mixture of peanut butter, which was pretty runny. I later had to thicken it up to do the fillet on the transom boards. But now that it is hard I noticed some cracking in the resin filled holes. Is that normal to get cracking...

    fiberglassing in new floor

I had to pull up some of the foam between the stringers and it is wet at the bottom, soaked like a sponge. I’m not sure if it has been wet all along or if it was me not getting it covered before it rained one night. So now my question is why is it soaking up water, isn’t it suppose to be for...

    Transom rebuild questions

I've noticed on a lot of transom rebuilds, guy's are cutting the bottom of the wood up above the drain plug, and filling it in with PB. Is this to keep the wood up away from the drain and possible water intrusion?

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I’m wondering, when you PBed the transom wood in the boat, did you put a thin layer on both the wood and the hull? Also about how much PB did it take to cover the transom?

    Polyester resin ?

Just in case anyone is looking for fiberglass supplies in the Minneapolis/St.Paul area, Express Composites has reasonable prices and the customer service is 2nd to none. I didn’t even ask them for any advice on how to do it/ or what to use for my project and Jim the owner went over every process...

I’m looking at a Singer 211 G 157 on marketplace and the guy doesn’t know if it’s a clutch or servo. He said it’s got a pedal so it is variable speed, does that mean anything?
