    1977 85 H.P. Evinrude Model # 85895C S# J0003143. Low idle issue.

The ones on mowers were usually ally , but then the flywheels were quite light too with most of the flywheel effect coming from the mass of the blade . Just looking at the Tohatsu , it has a spindly lightweight looking crankshaft and a solid flywheel and a doorstep of a (steel) key ,makes me...

Ha I was just thinking flywheel key , I was thinking of my iron horse post and that other dude with the mashed lower gear case and remembered I was forever replacing flywheel keys on rotary lawn mowers and wondered if it was an issue for outboards. The one on my Tohatsu is a massive slab or steel.

Yeah thats one thing I see different between motorcycles and outboards . Most of the bikes have a lot less crankcase volume and thusly higher primary compression . And looking at some of them crossflow motors they seem real primitive port wise. I used to fix race carts with the old...

No , which is why I mentioned it , but surely its implied . If the cyl/ bore wear or damage is such that it causes excess pumping inefficiencies it wouldn't it be in both directions ? especially at low speeds , and when the motor is bogging down they can get pretty slow . :)

A hot comp test . Dunno so much about outboards but 2 stroke motorcycles that are getting a bit tired tend to loose power noticeably once up to temp. It may be a bit of tiredness combined with excess fuel/oil that causes a bit of puddling , gotta remember that while low comp tested in...

    1998 evinrude 225 ocean pro help #2!

Try removing the pee hose from the engine and poke something in there ( bit of wire ) maybe even start motor and jiggle wire to try and flush it out . Im thinking it may just be the pee hose blocked and you may be able to dislodge the impedementia

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

We have a lake here , part of the hydro power scheme , and when the lake is real low there are rocks close to the surface waaaaaaay out from the shore . There is a red bouy attached to said rocks which sticks out of the water at low levels . You'd be stunned at how many peeps went over to see...

Mouse chewed through power trim cable

Absolutely repairable , when you get some heat shrink see if you cant get some with hot melt sealant lining the inside of the heat shrink . We used to use it for underground repairs ( the ole spade thru the phone line trick ) As you heat it up the sealant melts and as the heat shrink shrinks...

    Kodiak 225 Brake pad replacement

Yes , I never said otherwise , but it would seem other brake pad makers supply pads for the Kodiak 225 marine brakes . They are sold here in NZ and while I can see they offer cast stainless and Dacromet coated calipers for hi corrosion resistance they are not dedicated to marine only...

Napier Deltic Snow gas engine What impresses me is that not only did they have the knowledge required to come up with something like this ( try getting one built today ) but they could actually make it . Some of them castings are immense let alone the ability to machine them. 150 odd years...

I google stuff like that too , huge big old engines. Did you see the vid where some guy steps into the crankcase ( they had one of them blow off covers removed ) jumps/stands on the big end as it goes down past him , does a rev and steps back off ? Pretty sure it was one of the Wartsila...

New boat owners leaving the hobby

Yep me too . Im lucky that I can get out during the week when its not busy . We aint the fastest peeps at the ramp ( Mrs doesnt drive the boat or reverse the trailer ) and I dont like holding others up if its busy . Busy at our ramp means 10 cars/trailers in the carpark .
