    Comparing the Merc syn blend with the conventional there is actually more zinc in the syn blend than in the conventional. I saw this in my oil analyses.

    You've got a straight mineral oil and a syn blend. It really doesn't matter, after all the blend, is a BLEND.

    With any of these modern high tech engines you really need a good & skilled dealer because without diagnostic tools & training they are very tough to fix yourself. One reason why I still have my old boat with a points distributor and a 4bbl Quadrajet

    The Vortec intake gaskets are kinda delicate too. I actually prefer the pre Vortec. Those never had intake gaskets leaking coolant into the cam valley like on many GM cars the first few years of production till they changed the gaskets and publicized the change in the torque specs

    Also: On the Gen + true Vortec keep in mind that the intake manifold bolts take much lower torque than the pre Vortec, IIRC pre Vortec is like 30-35 ft lbs whereas the Vortec is like 15 ft lbs.     On mine I get a slight squeal when coming to the stops but no grating sounds, and as old as it is, I never had problems with the drive drifting down after being trimmed up.     Even before you get to that point... get a thread chaser (not a tap) and clean out all the cyl head bolt threads in the block and make sure that the new bolts will fully thread all the way in. Your engine is closed cooled so they will probably be pretty clean but on a raw water cooled engine...
