1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Don't know if you can source it where you are, but the best grease I have found for driveshaft splines is the Evinrude Triple Guard grease, it is sticky and clings on like crazy. When I pull it at the end of the season, there is still grease on them. However, if someone was to run one of these...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I think that delamination would happen from bad alignment, sagging engine mounts, etc but spline wear I think is more so due to people never pulling the drive and greasing the splines. That is a regular maintenance item, that many people ignore. Merc at least put grease fittings on theirs, now...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

What seems to make couplers last a long time: Proper alignment Pulling the drive regularly and using a good grease like OMC/Evinrude Triple Guard on the splines. My 1988 Cobra still has the original coupler.

    Maintenance Grease/Oil

The Lucas Marine grease I use is calcium sulfonate. I do still use the OMC/Evinrude triple guard on certain things.

    Maintenance Grease/Oil

There are grease compatibility charts out there, if you really don't have any idea, I think a lithium complex grease is about the most commonly used, but the only way, is to clean out what is in there, to eliminate all doubt. I started using Lucas Marine which is a calcium sulfonate grease, it...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Not sure if this will work on the cone clutch drive, but on my OMC Cobra what I have found helpful is to use a long thin screwdriver to turn the u-joints to get the driveshaft splines to line up, as long as the driveshaft is centered and entering the coupler that will help it to slide on. The...

    Maintenance Grease/Oil

The V8 takes a larger diameter filter than the V6 does, I think most strap wrenches will fit the filter for the V8. I like the Lisle filter wrench that uses a clamping force. I also have a collection of cap wrenches that fit both the Sierra or Merc/Quicksilver filters for my V6. Of course, I...

    OMC Cobra Shifting Issue

Ok did some checking on what you had originally and what you have now. Best I can determine is that the change to the one switch set up occurred in 1990 so your boat may have had that originally. Up to & including 1989 they used the 2 switch set up. The brackets & associated parts are all...

    OMC Cobra Shifting Issue

There were 2 different set ups used by OMC on the Cobras… The early models had the module & 2 switches; an interrupt switch that lowers the idle when you shift to neutral; and the overstroke switch which over-rides the interrupt switch to keep it from engaging when the drive is in gear. This can...

Casting numbers help omc cobra 5.0 HO motor thought 1993

The odd thing is most of the motor appears to be original OMC charcoal, except that orange which isn't even a Ford color, many Chevrolets (factory) were that color in the old days. The OMC charcoal is the correct color for that vintage OMC Cobra series. But yes what exactly are you asking here...

ohh Bondo now there ya go, giving me ideas.... that looks great is the cam OK for marine use? what about the head gaskets and core plugs? Lol It would probably blow up my old Cobra drive, which I'm surprised is still working just fine but a V8 will fit my boat, the engine mount pads are long...

    Water leaking from engine - 5.7 GXI-E

You know I didn't realize at first, you were the guy who had the water ingestion problem with the Chapparal right? and went through at lot trying to eliminate that. Did you ever solve it? I put Volvo style (actually was designed by OMC, Volvo just used their design) exhaust on my old '88 4.3...

    Water leaking from engine - 5.7 GXI-E

Sorry to hear of your loss of course other things take a back seat when you have to go thru things like that. Maybe with the boat in the water you might get lucky. Here in Long Island the water never froze solid like it can when the winters were colder and salt/brackish water doesn’t freeze till...

    Water leaking from engine - 5.7 GXI-E

I bet your answer is either one or both of these core plugs that's a huge amount of water all of it coming from the flywheel housing. And if there is water in the oil, likely the block is cracked. A forever problem with raw water cooled inboards, you forget just once you're done. Meanwhile at...
