If it's banging like a hammer then most likely it spun a rod bearing
What does this mean? reseated all
Could do a compression test to find out if it might be a valve issue
For clarification
VP GL motor that a Merc carb was installed? Don't see an issue with it so long as it fits
Did it run fine last season?
No need to tune in water until it's running fine on a hose
The popping as it warms up motor might need timing checked, cross tracking inside the distributor...
Look at your switch and see the amount of contacts 3, 4 or 5 and if its screws of wires that come out of the switch
The search "mercruiser key switch" and find one that is the same as yours
No,
I said it does not have a slave like, I said
The older ones looked like this
You have 3 relays on top, pic post 18
One of the 3 relays on top "IS" the slave relay
The other 2 are main power and fuel pump
If it's just the float level is set to high then a change will fix the issue
If you open the carb to check float level and find some crud, then rebuild, otherwise maybe not unless there are other issues
Don't have a clear understanding of the status or the motor. Old cam may have had issues and heads may have been redone, and if so measure valve steam height to see if it's within spec. If valve is to high due to incorrect seat install, seat and valve ground below spec the height will be to high
Yes it could be the key switch, Pre 2000 use to last forever, new ones not so mush. Only 2 ways to know if it's bad, replace and see if it never does it again, or use a meter when it's not starting and measure voltages
I'm no expert but there might not be a real problem. The lifter is working because no sign of valve not opening/closing correctly. One or more push rods not getting same amount of oil may not be an issue so long as it gets some. Gets some more from other rockers splashing oil on it
Only if it's adjusted to far, if set correctly there will be no issue
It's a metal coil spring sort of thing. When temps get colder the metal shrinks pulling the choke closed. The colder it gets the more it shrinks. Same thing happens in reverse when temps get warmer.
Going to get in a bad place real fast doing multi post
If you post is in the wrong section flag the post and a MOD will move it
I merged all post to the Merc section
