    Start with 1.5 turns out from lightly seated. Most times that is where it will be the best setting or 1/4 turn either way. Also checked in the water as dubs suggested.

    It appears that you have a Holley. If that is what you have then try this. 1.5 turns out from lightly seated with the idle mixture screws should idle correctly and with 1-1.5 turns on the idle stop screw. Any thing much more than these settings usually means it needs to be repaired.

    As suggested the drive has to come apart. Most likely the seals above the water pump is the source of the leak. You need to get a Genuine OMC service manual for this model. This thing can be a real can of worms.

    Any good welding shop can mig weld a patch over the hole. The most important surface is where the drive shaft boot attaches to the gimbal housing. If water ever sat in there long enough and the area where the boot seats is eroded away then it should be replaced.

    If the hole is in the 1-2 o’clock area or possibly on the opposite area it is an electrolysis problem. I have in the past had the area repaired at a welding shop if the rest of the housing was still in good condition. This hole being high in the housing usually never leaks into the boat.

    Worse than the exhaust you most probably melted the water pocket cover in the lower area of the upper drive shaft housing. If that happened then you will be losing water pressure to the thermostat housing, which will cause an over heating problem.
