E90TLESB - Son-In-Law's boat. Runs good but has to squirt Premix!

What is your starting procedure? I have seen oil come in red, blue, green and purple. They may even be more colorful oil out there.

    1986 Johnson 30 water pump

You can lap it your self. It means to flatten the head. Use a pice of glass or polished stone or a table saw top. It just needs to be a flat surface. Use sand paper to surface the matting surface of the head and remove any high or low areas whichever way you want to look at it. I usually...

    2005 175HP VINDICATOR

Personally I would stay far away from a ficht. Some people have had good luck with them but most have not. Parts are hard to find and you will likely need parts on a regular basis. It was just a crappy technology.

    1986 Johnson 30 water pump

Can it be used for awhile. Thats a million question. You could try to re torque the bolts but in my experience even if stop the leak it will likely start again after a few heat cycles. Your best bet would be to replace the head gasket sooner than later. Don’t forget to lap the head.

    1964 Johnson JW-19M Restoration project

In my eyes if your going to keep it do what ever you want. But if you plan to sell it I would keep it the original color. It can mean a lot to someone looking for a period correct motor.

    Johnson trim/lift assist cylinder

My socket is plastic and just pops off with a flat head. I see you have a Canadian model so I can’t be of much help. I would guess your socket had an c clip in it and should just pop off by prying on it but as rusty as it is it may not survive.

    Johnson trim/lift assist cylinder

So on my 02 model there are two flats on the top to remove the cylinder. They are small flats and there may be a special tool but in a pinch it looks like you could get a pipe wrench on it.

    Johnson trim/lift assist cylinder

I think once you remove the ball and socket you can remove an e ring then drive the pin out. I have one on my 40 hp I’ll take a closer look tomorrow and see if it looks to be serviceable. The parts should still be available.

    1986 Johnson 30 water pump

Is that 100% the correct impeller? The fins look a bit short to me but it could just be the photo. Do you have the old impeller? Is it the same?

    New evenrude

I remember something about the 85 was meant to be a 125 but there was a problem with the manufacturing of the block so the 85 was borne. I recall it being a power house. That was a long time ago. I could be very wrong about this.

Correct prop for mid-60's 18HP Johnson?

You will need to do a little research with your model number. You may find one here on IBoats.

    86 Johnson 28 Surging

I’m not sure how I missed that. You did say it has a new prop. So how about the mounting hight? It does sound like it’s catching air and that could be because it mounted to high.
  17. T

    86 Johnson 28 Surging

Sounds like your prop is slipping. Or you may be right about it not being mounted at the correct hight. The cavitation plate should be inline with the lowest point if the hull. If it is then check for a spun hub in the prop.

    40HP Johnson Tilt/Trim

Put an add in the wanted section of Craigslist. A buddy of mine picked one up for $25.00 doing that. I have also heard that the smaller of the 2 CMC units will work for a 40hp even thought they are rated for max 35hp. I guess their web site even states this. Best of luck

1969 20hp Johnson sea horse high revs with no propulsion when accelerating

In most cases it’s very hard to spin a prop with a shot hub by hand. Thats why it’s only slipping at high rpms.

Your goals are impressive and it’s a shame there are not more people that think like you in the world. Good things will happen to good people. All the Best on your project.
