    There are 2 posts on the ignition switch marked " M "-----To run the 2 posts are OPEN.------To stop the motor the 2 M posts are connected.

    Steps to take.----Nodody can see or feel your motor.----Need to know the compression values.----Post the actual numbers.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" on all 4 leads on a test device, yes or no ?----Replaced water pump impeller every 5 years ?

    Black plug.---12 volts is only used to energize the start solenoid and the choke solenoid.----The magneto under the flywheel generates the spark when it turns fast enough.

    Timing does not change unless the flywheel key sheared.----Post the results of a compression test.----You are running with fuel mixed at 50:1 in your tank ?-----Did you install a new water pump impeller when you bought this motor ??

    Are cheap carburetors good?

    For marine applications it is foolish to try and save a few $$ on a carburetor.-----Any leaks to the bilge might mean you had a parachute on , instead of a lifejacket !!

    Many folks have removed that pivot pin when trying to change the oil !!----That is a mistake.----If you are taking everything apart there is no need to worry when taking the pin out.----Did I say these lower units are easy to work on ??

    It is a pivot pin for shifter.----Take it out in order to take the lower unit apart.----Have a gearcase like that on the shelf here.----And one that is all apart.----They are easy to work on in my opinion !

    Stop !!!-----The coils on this motor do not use 12 volts from the battery to make spark.-----And I am working on a 1974 model 40 hp for the grandson.----New pistons and rings / water pump impeller / carburetor kit etc etc.----You may have done damage to points and coils if you applied 12 volts...

    Yes , that nut holds the lower half on.---Along with a stud / nut at the front.-----You can pull that pivot pin if you are taking the whole unit apart.

    Mark the hub and prop.----Test run the boat.----Inspect marks to see if they have moved after a slipping ( ? ) event.

    !996 Johnson 50hp 2-stroke. No fuel through choke.

    The electric primer is a valve.----It is not a pump.----When you push the key in and crank the motor , does fuel come out the little hoses.---Yes or no ?
