    Furuno 588 manual gain problems

i have a 2 year old Furuno 588 hooked to an Airmar tr260 transducer. It works fine as long as the gain setting is on fishing or cruising. When I switch the gain to manual it does not react at all . I can turn the knob in either direction and the gain remains exactly the same. There is not really...

How do I clean a Starcraft Islander hull

This summer I slipped my boat in a creek near Lake Ontario. This boat has always been on a trailer and I did not really consider growth and scum. Before to long I will have to pull the boat and I am painfully aware that my nice white boat bottom is no longer white. I have to clean the stuff off...

Caffeine good for sleepy old guy ?

Reading some of your posts, which often gyrate between grumpy ,angry, really out there and dreamy, it would be wise not to add too much caffeine to that already unpredictable mix.

tilt and trim fluid for 1989 4.3 liter OMC Cobra

I have been having problems with the T&T on my Islander For now I hope to have fixed the mechanical part. But the fluid in the pump is synthetic automatic transmission fluid instead of tilt and trim fluid. My question is whether it is crucial to have the tilt and trim fluid or whether it can...

    Duratech Boats

I really did like the one I had, a 17 footer, just like the ones that were used in the Bay of Pigs fiasco

Can you convert a 20HP Johnny to 35HP with a carb and intake manifold?

If my memory serves me well, the 20 horse and the 35 horse are different sized blocks. The 35 block is similar to the 28,30.33,40,50,55 block at least as far as size goes. It is however possible to soup up a 20 horse to produce 35 horse power with some tricks. I would not want to stand close to...

Marine Fuel Hose in place of Water Hose?

Just out of curiosity. Is this a drinking water carrying hose? If so, the fuel hose is iffy to say the least. The chemicals used in fuel hose production may spoil the taste of the water.

    Mechanical things hate me lately

I suspect that there are no new pieces of machinery involved in your string of bad luck on the equipment front. Old stuff usually has been through a few rough spots and no matter how good a mechanic you are, it is only possible to repair the parts, not the structure that holds everything...

Not so good vibrations ,1989 4.3 liter Cobra

I did suspect the gimbal bearing but when I greased it up, only clean grease was pushed out. It is, however on my agenda for when I winterize. I had not thought about water in the drive unit. I will drain and replace all the oil in there. Thanks for that tip.

Not so good vibrations ,1989 4.3 liter Cobra

So for the first time in my life, I decided to get a slip instead of always trailering. Going solo it makes things easier. The creek I slip in has a few hidden rocks and of course I found a few, that's the price of learning. After a few trips I noticed a vibration in the boat that had not been...

How/where do I find part numbers?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/387146816582 This is probably what you are looking for,but you should pull the original one and compare.

How/where do I find part numbers?

First make sure that it is not a loose wire. Then test the gauge. If both are good, pull the gauge. Kiekhafer, the owner of Bayliner, often uses Faria for their gauges and do not make their own. The fuel sender is also an off the shelve piece of equipment that can be replaced by another off the...

Installing a tachometer on an old Evinrude.

There is a cheap and effective gadget called tiny tac. It has a lot of knock offs and that makes them quite cheap. You attach it to your motor by wrapping the red wire 4 or 5 times around a sparkplug cable and the white wire goes to a ground on the engine. It has a 16 foot cable (you can...

    Recommendation for gps display

Seeing that you are moving through channels , you should have a navigation system that is updated very often because after a good storm the channel may be somewhere else altogether. A good fishfinder will provide you with constant depth information. May advise would be a navionics often online...

    Trailer guides

I use bunk type guides while my trailer has rollers. Bringing the boat onto the trailer is still not perfect, but being alone in the wind and the current gives me the control I need. Sometimes I back the trailer down a bit farther to get the boat in perfect position, but the side bunks make it...

How would you answer this question?

A three and five year old have a short attention span and they need a lot of distraction. They also need to be able to move around freely. A boat is not where you can do that. The type of boat suggested here, has a lot more to do with what daddy wants to do than what the kids want.

    boat foam?

Water can burst PVC foam. If there is a small crack in the foam water will penetrate and stay where it is. In winter, this water will freeze and expand, thereby making the cracks deeper. Every time this process repeats itself , the cracks will get bigger and more water will penetrate. This is...

    boat foam?

I redid the flotation foam on 3 of my Islanders. The problem with poured expansion foam is that it sticks to the bottom and it does not allow water to drain. No matter how closed cell the material is, it will eventually start absorbing water because the water has nowhere else to go. I believe...

Anyone know where to get or make a replacement follower for carb throttle linkage?

This may sound as if I'm from another planet, but these pieces are easily made on a 3d printer. If you know somebody who has one, just bring the parts of the broken one and glue them together. The printer will make you a new piece

    Kicker motor vs towing

I'm thinking that in this case the word "towing" is really used instead of "trailering". Whether you are towing a boat in the water with or without a kicker has nothing to do with the Panther warning about towing. They want you to remove the kicker from their bracket when you trailer the boat on...
