PB'ing new transom wood to boat

I used 1/4" chopped strand in pretty much all my PB, and definitely used it when gluing in the transom.

    core replacement, epoxy test panels

Totally agree with Ted. For 1708 layups o always flipped it over (mat side up) on a sheet of plastic and fully wet it out from that side. Then liberally roll on resin to where the glass will go. Then peel up your wetted out 1708 from the plastic, transfer to the work area, and start rolling it...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Thanks Zool and Buck! I feel like after today I'm over the hump. I think I'll be doing a first start around mid-week. I couldn't finish the install today because I ran out of 14 AWG wire, but should have more tomorrow. First thing I did was pull the port exhaust elbow, riser, and manifold...

    1986 Bayliner Capri 1600 Question

Agree with Buck. Do you have the space (dry and able to be warmed in the winter) to do the restoration? Do you have the time (mine took 18 months) and desire to see it through? You can learn the skills and if you're really into seeing it through, you'll come up with the money. You should make...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

More Sniper work today. The harness that comes with the unit is nice and well thought out, but too short for my application so I extended it to the length needed for my boat. After extending the wires, I got the harness installed in the boat and tucked out of the way with the other wiring that...

    1987 350 Mercruiser thermostat choices

Is the 160 degree thermostat something I can go to an auto parts store to pick up or do I need to buy Mercruiser brand? Same engine as OP...a 1987 Mercruiser 350.

Don't worry about the EFI haters...I'll do a writeup on my Sniper installation when I'm done.

Mercury MCM165 6CYL 250CID Exhaust Riser for Holley Sniper

I'll be doing a Sniper on my 5.7 this coming week. I think for the riser you may have to go custom for the 250 - it's a pretty simple design though. I would take it to a local fab/machine shop and have them make one out of stainless for you. Take your stock riser and the Hardin one and tell them...

Cool, so an AR15 upper wrench has the same size spanner on it? Good to know!

    Wiring Gauge Question

It depends. The main things to consider for choosing the minimum wire gauge for a circuit are how many amps that the circuit is protected for and the length of the wire run. You can use a calculator like this one to help you choose.

Zool, do you just hold the cup up next to the hull to see how close the color is? Thanks for the tip...I think you're right about what color it needs.

Mercruiser 3.7 (470) wont turn all the way

That can only be determined by measuring the bores and then cutting until the groove is removed. Take it to a machine shop.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Worked on fixing the scratch today. I didn't finish, but I'd say today was mostly a success, being that I should be good enough to get the boat on the water the rest of the weekend. Here's the gouge before I started. I pulled the bow eye off for the repair. I used a 1/2" sanding drum on a...

    Sapele marine marine plywood

Didn't know you could get this. Yes, Sapele is sold as mahogany, because you can't buy Honduran mahogany any longer. It's good water-resistant wood. The original boat builder for my boat used mahogany in places and I used it in key places and didn't have an issue with polyester resin sticking...
