Evinrude 9.5 vs 8hp speed test

The 9 1/2 was no speed demon, and was last produced in 1973, and was definitely Crank Rated. The 8 was made during the Time Period where OMC was switching to Prop Ratings. There may have been some improvements in Hydrodynamics of the 8hp gear housing and propeller design compared to the 9 1/2...

Depends on what a persons Idea of Similar is. It is only a 1 1/2 hp difference. What are you currently using on the Boat?

    Carb Spacer

#44 is the Gasket for the Four bbl to 2 bbl Adapter, which was never discussed by the OP. He showed #43, along with a Spacer that isn't shown in the Parts List/Diagram

Are you using any kind of Remote Control on this engine?

    Carb Spacer

Oh, so now there is a Leak between the Carb Body and the Throttle Plate. That Gasket is part of any Carb Overhaul Kit. There is no spacer between the Carb and intake in the video

I would do Compression and Ignition Checks, on both Engines before spending time on the Fuel System. A dead Cylinder on one engine will hold back the other engine. Operator can try running with just one engine at a time, to help narrow it down to which engine it is

    1997 50hp Johnson - techron issue?

It was, but it is also a very good Solvent on Organic(Carbon) materials Halon, another Extinguishing Agent, also produced Poisonous Fumes once it was heated by the fire it was extinguishing

    Carb Spacer

The Mercury Parts Catalogs(at least the ones I accessed) don't show any spacer between the Carb and Manifold. I would get a second Gasket

Oil change interval, synthetic or no, curious what we all do

Under enough Pressure/Heat/Time it is very possible. Natural Gas is found in great quantities deep underground, and it comes from things decomposing. Coal is comprised of Layers of what resembles pressed Vegetation

I would rebuild it if possible, and avoid the 4 strokes as long as you can.

    Carb Spacer

I would think a gasket would be on both sides of the spacer

    1997 50hp Johnson - techron issue?

If you want to decarb the engine, go get a couple of cans of Merc Power Tune, and follow the instructions. Carbon Tetrachloride works real well, and OMC Engine Cleaner used to be pretty much just it. But it is bad for your Liver and Kidneys when you have inhaled the fumes

    1997 50hp Johnson - techron issue?

Maybe a bit of dislodged Dirt/Varnish/Gum due to the Techron, blocked a fuel passage in the carb. That is a Major reason pouring Dr. Quacks Miracle Elixir into the fuel tank isn't the proper way to clean a Carb
