    Glassing in new motor mounts?

nola mike I measured my 4.3 mount locations with a tape measure. The pic below gives the horizontal dimensions. These are probably close enough for you to locate your front mounts. The vertical distance between front and rear mounts is a little iffy since I was standing on my head, and measuring...

    Lateral engine alignment

No, I have a problem keyboarding. Mine is also 1.010" The only experience I've had removing the transom plate was helping my pal remove his. I don't recall if the gimbal hsg's bearing hub passed through the hole in the transom plate. The pic below says it does, and provides alignment between...

    Lateral engine alignment

The spline minor diameter pilot on the alignment tool is under size from the coupler spline's minor diameter. SAE spec on the coupler minor dia ispline is 1.005"/1.000". The tool's pilot is 1.001" dia. Possible interference. I've had my alignment tool in two different couplers while the engines...

Sending unit inaccessible / drill tank in place?

I replaced my sending unit while recarpeting. It was under the tank access panel. But I had to remove a lot of upholstery to get to the panel. So I cut in a floor access cover in case I need to get in there again. So consider one of these.

    Very Essential Non-special Tool

Using my stay at home time to do some PM. I couldn't find my 3/8" 12 pt socket to pull my top cover. I have an offset box end that worked OK to get the cover off. But I need to torque the cap screws later. So I donned the mask and headed for the hardware store. The clerk was wearing a mask...

    Drilling larger holes

I have a circle cutter like GA mentioned. It works well with a little practice. Another poster was wondering about cutting a large hole in his fuel tank. I suggested this as an alternative. HVAC guys use these to cut holes in duct work for star collars.

    Safely Cutting a fuel tank

Assuming your tank is aluminum, you should be good, especially with all of your prep. Aluminum doesn't spark. If steel, you should still be OK. Fumes are the risk. If you want to make a pretty hole, you may want to buy or rent one of these. ...I'm fixing to do my own duct work on a basement...

    ....stocking up for Corona virus

Admiral asked me to bring back the hand sanitizer from our river place. Three partially empty bottles. I poured the most empty in the other two and topped off with 95% cheapo Ever Clear ethanol. Then I added about 1/4 bottle to the empty with Solarcaine Cool Aloe gel, topped it off with the high...

Another DIY tale: Repairing a water softener valve head.

Our river place's 8 yr old Omnifilter water softener started back dribbling into the brine well last summer. The brine well float valve kept it under control...with a 1/2" to spare before overflow. I called Omnifilter's tech. "Sorry, the valve body is non-serviceable" Hrmmph. I pulled the assy...

VP special tools and part costs?

Another forum, same topic: Specing in my new boat. I've held fast any new boat would have the Merc 4.5, mainly because I am fully tooled and skilled for the Alpha II, and am not afraid of aftermarket parts. But I also want full fresh water, closed cooling. And that's starting to look iffy from...

Any room for new boat price negotiation, or is it take it or leave it?

Again, a small dealer/brand sample size here, but I've run into "the manufacturer dictates our selling price" on my two top brand picks. 19-20' BRs. A bit smelly to me after nicely negotiating down MSRP on eight new autos. KBB, Edmunds and others help with vehicle price transparency, but I'm...

Boat weight distribution on a bunk lift (?)

tpenfield Scott Danforth Here is a screen shot of the carriage assembly. A few parts are missing from the model, but I hope this helps. The "boat" shown is my 16' 9" OAL Larsen. The wheels are hard to see, but they are 6" flanged bridge crane trolley wheels under the bunk support structure. The...

Boat weight distribution on a bunk lift (?)

I'm getting closer to buying a larger, heavier boat. Current boat is on a marine rail lift that I designed and built for that boat. I'm asking my structural engineer son to pay back some of the tuition I paid to analyze my rail system's load limits. That will answer some questions, with pretty...

Is the 4.5 Merc scaring dealers off?

I've been upping my research into my possible next boat. Small sample, but checking inventory in MN and IA at three different dealers all I see is VP Sterndrives on their stock boats. Each brand offers the Merc 4.5 in my size. Any thoughts about the dealer's preference for VP? If I buy an I/O...

Comparing new boats. ..wondering about Regal

I've generally believed the way a boat is used, maintained, and stored as important, if not more important than the boat brand for longevity and reliability. I've got my comparison sheet built comparing several 19-20' BR brands, including Regal. The best thing about the Regal is the price and...
