Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

I found my original part number on that site but I didn't see anything about a replacement number. *shrug*

So how did you get that number? Also when I search West Marine, I get no results. I think that's the only boat shop around here.

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Disregard my last message, I found it on boats.net so it's on its way. So I figure I'll replace the impeller, fire up the engine with the water ear plugs on it and see if it gets hot, and then just poke around. I wonder if the exit plug is partially clogged, because I've had that happen before...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Ok new problem. Even though my impeller looks fine, I have it all open so I might as well replace it anyway, it is years old. But everywhere I look, this part is no longer made and not in stock ( 430261 ) Is there an updated part number? Is there a better way to look this up than by engine...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Oops I forgot to attach the pictures. Pic #1 Does this plastic washer thing go on the little geared spline to the front of the main shaft? Looks like it does but I didn't see where it actually fell from Pic #2 Honestly that looks basically perfect to me. I know on here, people often say you...

    Dust Cap Woes

Can you show me what you mean because I don't get exactly where you're saying to punch it?

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

So today was interesting. I removed the lower unit for the first time ever. That wasn't bad at all. I mean it's the first time *I* removed it, not the first time it's BEEN removed. So it came off nice and easy, I took it into my basement and took apart the pump cover and MUCH TO MY SURPRISE...

    Dust Cap Woes

I know exactly what you mean, I have a few of those in my basement in a spot where there used to be a bathroom. I don't think they will work though, like you said they have no hollow part so they'd hit the lock nut on the hub and I don't think you'd even be able to install it.

    Dust Cap Woes

What exactly is a bearing buddy? Are they just dust caps with a grease fitting on top or is there more to them than that? Do they press fit in just like normal caps? Cause with more weight and the same attachment, it seems like they would fall off even easier?

    Dust Cap Woes

I hear you. However...... 1) Pins seem normal, they're not touching the caps at all. 2) They are the right size and I bought multiple packs from different popular brand auto stores around. They all are nearly impossible to install and then shortly thereafter, eject themselves while driving...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Hmmmm ok, given that, I guess it can't hurt to have the compressor on hand. Is it going to be obvious by looking where the water pathways are once the lower unit is removed? Also, I was driving in some notoriously weedy river water at the time this started, so it's entirely possible something...

    Dust Cap Woes

I've been having nothing but trouble with my dust caps the past few years. I've gone through half a dozen of them. Either they refuse to go on and get absolutely destroyed while I try to hammer them on, even when using a PVC pipe like you're supposed to. Or I finally get them on nice and tight...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Ok getting back to this. First question: Does anyone know if it's just four bolts to pop the lower unit off on my older unit? It's a 1989 90HP. I guess that's the only question. I'm watching a video for a newer mercury engine and it looks extremely straight forward. I like to buy the parts...

How do these spark plugs look to you?

They look really good to me but I'm no mechanic. I don't remember when I replaced them last. Might have been a few years ago, might have been 10 years ago.

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

For sure. But I won't be doing this until Spring. And realistically, Spring will probably turn into Summer. That said, I don't even have to uncover the boat to pop the lower unit off so who knows.

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

It's been a solid 10 years since a mechanic has worked on this engine. He may have replaced the impeller, maybe not. If not, it's been 15+ years on this impeller. I think it's safe to assume I need the full kit. Granted I don't go out very many times these last few years. But from 2009 through...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

LOL I never would have found it there! Also daaaaang the repair kit (8M0113799) is shockingly expensive! I mean it's all relative but I was expecting more like $40, not $180. Oh well beats $20,000 for a new motor. Ok next question: I watched a video of how to do this yourself and it looks...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Ok so I guess a new impeller is on the list for next year. Question: Is there some OTHER problem that could be causing this behavior or is this a situation where it is more or less definitely the pump? Also, since at the very least, I probably need a new impeller anyway, where do you find...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Story time: To my knowledge, I was having no thermal problems before yesterday. So I went for my last ride of the year yesterday since it was about 30° above normal outside. I went up a small river which was just full of leaves. So after an hour or so, the engine starts smoking. It's a 2 cycle...

    Draining Mystery Water

I think you're just seeing shadows from the street lights. There is no rust there at all. Plus I trailer the boat so it's almost never just sitting in water. And the motor was removed by a professional a few years ago when I got a new steering system,he bolted and glued it all back in place and...
