Trimming with Outdrives and Trim Tabs

Thanks for the response. While the other owner has had the boat for five years, their background is sailing. They are just putting the drives all the way nose down and solely trimming with the tabs. Thanks for the manual Scott. The Bennett manual with the boat didn't have a section on Trim...

Trimming with Outdrives and Trim Tabs

I recently acquired a 50% share in a 30' Commander Sport Cruiser with twin Volvo diesels and outdrives. The boat also has trim tabs that I don't have much experience with since my current 21' Chris Craft only has an outdrive, which I trim up and down to trim the boat. I know how to trim with...

Question on boat shopping: 1999 Crownline 202 5.0 liter

5.0L for a 20' boat should be fine. That's likely the upper range of the engine sizes offered for that boat. Lower end boats of that size would come with a 4.3L.

    1995 OMC 5.0L Electrical mishap

Being a '95 he probably has a Cobra SX (Volvo) with engine mounted raw water pump. I'd just fire it up for a few seconds to confirm it starts, with the drive down to be easy on the U-joints.

Trailer needs attention on used flat bottom.

Just raise the bunks so they take more of the load. Looks like they slipped down.

How in the heck do you get these spark plugs out??

You should be okay once you get the plug socket with the integral swivel. There isn't room to pull the plugs with a separate swivel on these engines, as you're finding out.

    Good Source for Trailer Axles?

Finally received the Speedi Sleeves and got them installed. They don't entirely cover the grease ports, which is expected since the seal lip needs to be inboard of the port. I could punch out the hole more fully, but I've frankly given up on using this "Sure-Lube" system. More often than not...

    Trim sensor and gauge

I would remove the sensor from the drive while still connected electrically, then rotate the input while monitoring the gauge. Can you rotate the input so that the gauge needle moves full travel? If not, then the sensor isn't compatible with the gauge. If you can get full travel, trim the...

    1995 OMC 5.0L Winterizing

Did you poke the open drain with a slender object? They can get plugged with rust flakes, so you're supposed to poke the drains to ensure they're clear. It is preferred to just drain the raw water cooling system (drains, hoses, etc) verses adding anti-freeze. As Scott says, air doesn't freeze.

    Neutra Salt System

If you have two reservoirs then you likely have two solenoids. Its unlikely they would both fail open at the same time, so I would be looking at the switch that controls the solenoid to see if it's stuck closed. I would put a meter on the contacts of the switch and confirm it only has...

    Road King rehab

Axle components are generally sized by the axle rating, which should match or exceed the trailer GVWR. To check the axle condition, pull the wheel/hub/bearings and check the condition of the axle under the bearings and under the rear seal. The rear seal surface condition needs to be very...

    Good Source for Trailer Axles?

Thank you! I forgot about Speedi sleeves. That's way easier than the axle replacement, brake line transfer, bleeding, etc. There isn't a Speedi sleeve on there already (see pic of other axle).

    Good Source for Trailer Axles?

I'm getting water in my bearings due to poor axle surface conditions under the rear seal (see pic). I need a galvanized 2"x3" square 5200 lb axle with a 4" drop. This is for a Calkins trailer. I found that Pacific Trailers can custom build one for $280. Before I pull the trigger with them...

    Erroneous Temp Sensor Reading

I'm having an issue with my OMC/Volvo engine water temperature sensor reading about 35 deg F too high. I've confirmed nominal temperature at the sensor with an IR gun (150 - 160F once warmed up). I've also confirmed the IR gun is reading accurately via a different temp probe. I've replaced...

    AGM Battery Over-discharge Damage?

I have a Marine dual use 12V AGM battery that I over-discharged to 8.5V. It's charging back up now. I understand over-discharging a battery can damage it, or reduce it's capacity. After charging it I'll take it to an auto parts store for a load test. If it passes that load test are there any...

Transom Seal for Shift Cable Housing

I'm starting to chase down a minor fresh water leak in my bilge. One area I want to investigate is the seal where the shift cable housing exits to the outdrive. I remember the cable housing feeling a little loose through the transom when I did my annual service last fall. I've scoured the BRP...

Lower Temp Thermostat with Closed Cooling System?

Should a closed cooling system have a lower temperature thermostat than a raw water system? I ask because my motor is spec'd to a 160degF thermostat with a raw water cooling system. My boat has a closed system with raw water going through the oil cooler, heat exchanger, exhaust manifolds, and...

    Keeping canvas alive?

The key is keeping it clean, so that the waterproofing works. Mine has a lot of pollen and mildew stains. I plan to clean it in an industrial front load washer at a local laundry mat. Holds eight regular loads worth. Will run with mild soap, then again with mild bleach. You can also scrub it on...

Reverse Uphill with Disc Surge Brakes

I just had my drum brakes replaced with disc brakes and just picked the trailer up from the shop today. The forward braking is much better and smoother. Unfortunately, the reverse lockout solenoid doesn't appear to be working and I'll have to take it back. This is with a Titan disc surge...

Water Inlet Removal from Pivot Housing

This year I tried to replace the water inlet from the pivot housing on my '95 OMC/Volvo Cobra SX drive as preventative maintenance, but there was a ton of white powdery corrosion holding it in place. I tried to remove as much as I could and tried to drive the inlet out with a block of wood and a...
