How do you screw into fiberglass/gelcoat without chipping?

Has anyone ever tried the drill bits for putting holes in plexiglass and the like?

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

The last I heard it was a $10,000 fine for a shop that was caught removing a DEF system. Might be kind of hard finding one to do it. I own a saws-all and a welder but the computer must be dealt with too. Person to person sell nets more money anyway. Having the DEF system deleted would increase...

Spark plugs and cap replacement interval

Electricity isn’t the only concern with rings. I went ringless for most of my 50+ years after having my class ring catch in a basketball net. It came loose before I was damaged. It scared me pretty bad because I knew several men at the time who were missing ring fingers. I wear a rubber wedding...

If I were to buy a new diesel truck, the DEF system would disappear the same day the factory warranty expired.

Boat is put away for winter. What to do every day ?

The lake is unlikely to freeze here so no winter storage for mine. Temperatures do get below freezing so I make sure I drain what I can at the ramp and park it at home with the engine vertical. Finding shad for bait can be a challenge but I think the best time to catch blue catfish is during the...

MFS9.8 4 stroke races when choke is off

As an afterthought, someone may have tweaked up the idle speed to mask what is likely a carburetor problem.

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

There is one thing about the newer tech that is nice… it runs much longer before it fails. I don’t know of very many pre 1980 vehicles that would run 200,000 miles relatively trouble free with only one change of spark plugs. Most cars today easily make that mark.

Sounds like it is running lean. No video to see.

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL valve cover leak

In the valve cover gasket example I posted, the screw torque is 65 lbs/in by the book. The aftermarket silicone gaskets get 20-25 lbs/in. There should be something written somewhere if torque required is different.

    I should add a 2nd battery...

We have had bilge pumps kill batteries here with boats parked on lifts in covered slips and good boat covers (not generic fit all) installed. You wouldn’t think much water would get in but it does. I have also encountered bilge pumps running with no water to pump and the switch off because of...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL valve cover leak

Was there a gasket material change? On some applications I have worked, a paper or fiber gasket was replaced with a thicker silicone gasket. The silicone gaskets leak like a sieve because they distort and squeeze out of position when torqued to the book specifications. The proper torque for the...

    Fish finders

I have some electronics on my boat. I catch more bass beating up the banks when the screen shows no fish than I do when the screen is full of fish. I bought Live Scope a couple of years ago. I shouldn’t have because it was out of my budget by a good bit. The hope was to help me find crappie...

    ‘77 Johnson 70hp Starter Troubleshooting

I am not familiar with solenoids that do not ground through the mount. Everything else I have worked on sends “I” to the coil, a light or it is left empty because it has bus voltage when the solenoid is engaged. The diagrams I reviewed today confirmed it for me. I don’t have the diagram for this...

    ‘77 Johnson 70hp Starter Troubleshooting

What I don’t see in any wiring diagram is where any small post on a solenoid runs straight to ground.

My bad. I looked it up. I was thinking master solenoid. Starter solenoid gets power.

Mercruiser 4.3 EFI leaking fuel but can't find leak??

Could it becoming from the fuel pump? The 4.3 EFI here had the pump conveniently located on the port side behind the motor mount with a plastic cover hiding it. There wasn’t any access to inspect it. Replacing it required the motor to be lifted.

I tried to attach the manual on my phone but the file is too big. It should be available for download on the Volvo Penta website.
