Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

If you plan on a trip up a shallow river, you will need a way to trim the motor. My Jackplate was a 2 piece kind. Basically on each side, there was 2 aluminum angle irons bolted together. A bolt on each allowed for up/down adjustment. The width of the Jackplate allowed me to mount my '77...

    96 Mariner Magnum 3, 150hp: Quick Help

Gee, thread is still open. Merc V6 engines have an oil reservoir on the engine, and can also have one in the bilge. Engine crankcase pressure forces the bilge reservoir to refill the engine reservoir continuously. The engine oil reservoir is gravity feed to the oil pump. Low speed (<2000RPM)...

1996 Evinrude 115 fuel hose routing

Here is a parts list. I am not sure if the model is exactly the same but should be close. I am not sure if it will help though. I have a motor similar to yours, but unfortunately, I have never needed to work on the primer, and the boat is well covered for the winter. Hopefully someone has...

Transom bolt pattern for older (1983) 50HP 4 cyl Mercury with power tilt and trim

Your Merc and it's PTT system should use 6 3/8" bolts. One in each of the lower "arms" of the transom bracket and 2 on each PTT bracket. The bolt pattern is different from the BIA standard, but I was able to mount it to a Jackplate, with some new drilled holes. Remember, when trimmed, the PTT...

    Spinning reels

Gee, only my newest Ugly Stik has SS guides. I suppose all the other OEMs could have converted in the last 5 years or so, but my suite of fishing rods is older, and definitely do not have SS guides.

Compression and leakdown tests can tell the condition of the cylinders and pistons.

How do I drain my fuel line?

Two ways to do it. One is to remove the fitting at the motor end and pump the primer bulb. Second is to stick a small screwdriver into the motor end fitting and push the chrome ball back against it's spring. Now pump the primer. Be careful not to tear the rubber seal that touches the ball.

    Spinning reels

Ugly Stik rods and Penn reels are good quality. Penn reels has a nationwide chain of places to get parts, if you break something. I have never broken an Ugly Stik rod, unlike some Garcia's, Daiwa's and others. Newer Ugly Stiks have SS guides, which are nice here in salt water. Some years...

Should I use a kicker when trolling in a 4.3L Mercruiser?

To add to what Lou said. In saltwater use, any steel parts are vunerable to corrosion. On my '88 4.3LX, I used to find bits odd black-painted rusty metal in the bilge every once in a while. Some were part of the flywheel cover, some were unknown. I also had to remove the circulating pump...

    1988 Mercury 90 RPM Issue

Mercury motors often have high and low speed stator windings. If the high speed stator windings went bad, RPM will be limited. You might ohm them out.

When installing a new impeller, inspect the bottom of the old one. Look for damage there, which has been often known to lead to overheat at idle. I would also inspect/replace the thermostat, as that controls cooling at slow speeds. High speed cooling is controlled by the poppit valve.

    Brake based limited slip differentials

The way I understand the "Posi-traction" limited slip differentials of the 70s and 80s, was that they often had mechanical breaking on the wheel that slips.

Winterizing, use E-0 stabilized gas or install shut off valve and run carb out of fuel?

Gee, I have never had an issue with E10. It keeps the fuel system clean, and eliminates water in the fuel, or really cuts it down. My water separators have an oz of water or less in them at the end of the season. I only change them when they start to rust on the outside. On multicarb OB...

Gonna need to pull my Alpha outdrive, no water flow.Thinking its clogged

Charlie, I have had the water passage under the waterpump in the OD, nearly clog with barnacles. A lot of Alphas have removeable gratings for water intake. You can pull 'em off and take a look.

Aftermarket Mercruiser parts, What are you using???

On my MerCruiser, I would routinely use automotive fan belts which were $10 vs $70 for Quicksilver ones. I also matched auto U joints (less than $10 ea) vs the Quicksilver ones at $50ea. For non-DIYs, using Quicksilver parts can make some sense, as they may (may) last longer, and installation...

    Water in bilge

Gee, water is 8 pounds per gallon. Why not add 200 gallons of water to your boat on the trailer? What could go wrong?

    Not getting Forward

Gee, Mercury controls almost never wear out. I have a MerControl from 1977 and another older one (white) that work perfectly. However, I have a Mercury control from about 4 years ago that is tricky to put together properly, if it was apart. The throttle only linkage serves to anchor the shift...

    Trailer and trim button issues.

Alpha drives have the trim limit switch exposed to the water. It is simply a copper contact and a copper pointer on the outdrive tilt joint, which moves as you trim. The water rots them out. However, with your description, it sounds like some wires are connected wrong. if it were me, I...

Should I use a kicker when trolling in a 4.3L Mercruiser?

I doubt the 4.3 motor will have an issue with idling for hours. They tend to be real good at that. The question is whether they troll slow enough to catch fish. If not, there are trolling planes (baffles) that slow the boat down enough for trolling. Alternatively, a trolling motor or kicker...
