1993 OMC 5.8 EFI and drive system conversion to Volvo Penta

There is a lot of confusion over what OMC did in certain years, and a lot of the documentation is hard to find because they have been out of business for so long. So what I'd do is post up a pic of what you have, I thought they eliminated the overstroke switch on the later models and used an ESA...

1993 OMC 5.8 EFI and drive system conversion to Volvo Penta

The interrupt switch is normally open and the overstroke switch is normally closed. This is from my OMC shop manual: for the interrupt: After disconnecting the plug for the ESA behind the shift cable bracket. insert the test probes into the male connector plug (blue leads). Ohmmeter should be...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I think so, because there is no vacuum against the ball valve with the engine off.

slight gas in oil 2009 yamaha 4 stroke

You can have either fuel dilution or water dilution of the motor oil, or even both at the same time, to know which you have to do an oil analysis. Fuel dilution is probably more likely to over-rich fuel issues, such as a carbed engine with a sticking float, choke not coming off when it should...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

The only time the ball valve opens is when suction from the pump, pulls against the spring pressure. When the pump quits pumping the spring is supposed to close the ball valve to shut off the flow of fuel. Your question of what would happen if the fuel line leaked with the engine running vs with...

Very difficult to shift into Neutral

If you want your adjustments to be accurate: get the flex tool set it where it will run on land put the boat in the water then adjust the mixture and idle speed, because a marine exhaust system has back pressure that is not present while running the boat on land, and my experience suggests that...

Merc 4.5, any reason I can't just dump the block and manually fill with pg antifreeze?

Yep, my brother traded his 2020 Chap with the 4.5 I/O on a 2024 Chap with a Yamaha 4 stroke OB. I basically told him because we are in salt water sooner or later that one point drain will clog up due to the way cast iron corrodes, and then he'd have to clean out the drains which on these modern...

Very difficult to shift into Neutral

Yep that’s the only way with the Rochester style carbs (the Mercarb is a slightly modified Rochester 2bbl IIRC). The Weber/Edelbrock & Holley carbs are much easier to adjust.

has the engine ever been frozen/not winterized with raw water still in it? what caused the exhaust manifold to crack?

Merc 4.5, any reason I can't just dump the block and manually fill with pg antifreeze?

My brother had one of these (Merc 4.5 200 hp) and what we did was drain it fully and then filled it with -100 marine antifreeze via the vent opening on the left side of the engine, till it ran out the outdrive water intakes. Took a while but no problems doing it that way. On my old OMC, I just...

    Mercruiser exhaust question

I change the oil in my brothers Merc Alpha with the bottle and what I found was you have full it till it comes out the vent, then replace vent screw and keep pumping till the gear oil reaches the lube monitor bottle. Since there could be air pockets you have to recheck it after running it the...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

It’s really a safety device. If the fuel line from the tank to the filter/pump ruptures that valve prevents fuel from siphoning out of the tank into the bilge. Particularly important if the top of the tank is higher than the level of the filter/pump. As I mentioned I had the same problem & the...

2002 5,7 Mercruiser exhaust manifold keeps cracking - 5 times this summer

Most mechanics I know around here like BARR if you aren't using OEM. I have to say this is one of the most mysterious engine problems I have come across. While some might argue, I think BARR is very close to OEM quality. Other than the cyl head on that side being out of level as far as the...

Where is the idle mix adjustment on this carb on a 5.7 350 with Thunderbolt IV?

Yep be careful because on the port side you may have to thread the tool inboard of the alternator or PS belt depending on the installation. The issue is that they are on the underside of the carb and the big bulky 'stat housing gets in the way.

Major flooding in CT August 18th, marina destroyed

We had flooding similar to that on Long Island not right where I live but about 5 miles to the east of us. Roads washed out, etc, probably the same storm that caused the damage above.
