Inspecting 2002 Tracker 125 HP Outboard

".........and improving idle quality." Ha! My '88 I6 tower of power was the smoothest idler I ever bought! It also liked to run at 6k RPM.

Inspecting 2002 Tracker 125 HP Outboard

Well why is it built like no other 2 stroke engine?

Inspecting 2002 Tracker 125 HP Outboard

Pure speculation on my part but it seems to me that a lot of boaters troll for certain types of fish. My speculation leads me to think that Mercury, in their infinite wisdom, thought they would make an engine that would take you to the fishing grounds, troll efficiently, and bring you back...

    My 115 was a 2002 year model.

Inspecting 2002 Tracker 125 HP Outboard

Your old 50 had all the cylinders active all the time. Not so with this engine. The lower cylinders get a little fuel to keep the lube up but not enough to light off. As the throttle is increased, the fuel pressure from the fuel pump increases and that increase if felt by a couple of pressure...

Inspecting 2002 Tracker 125 HP Outboard

I recall Faztbullet making the same comment years ago. As I mentioned somewhere earlier, I wonder what Mercury did to get 10 more HP from the 115 HP with its rev limiter set to 5250.

    1994 mariner 115, oil injection

You just nullified finding the top cap seal as your potential problem if it's the problem. It shows up on a full tank (or near full) with the engine tilted all the way up sitting overnight or longer. First clue is you have oil in the bottom of the engine compartment when you take the cowling...

1997 Merc 9.9 two stroke dies when advancing throttle

Don't waste your time nor money chasing a ghost. Do as directed and if that isn't the problem THEN start your worrying.

Inspecting 2002 Tracker 125 HP Outboard

My last OB engine was a 2002 Mercury 115 2+2....same basic engine but has RPM limiter set to 5250 RPM. I don't know what makes that 10 hp increase on the 125...could be just no rev limiter allowing the RPMs to climb on up to a higher number....5500 or 6000, or carb jet increase my guess. My 115...

    1994 mariner 115, oil injection

What's the origin of the leak......the seal for the fill cap? On OI being any good or not I have a 90 I disabled and later a 115 that I didn't, both 2002 engines. I'll bet you find a lot of folks sitting on both sides of the fence on that subject.

1997 Merc 9.9 two stroke dies when advancing throttle

That's the test for the correct position of the low speed screw.......open it up as stated until the boat takes throttle, especially coming out of the "hole" and getting on plane.

    85hp Merc?

Well I had the last 1988 (year built, sold as a '89 model) 115 I6, Direct Charged "Tower of Power" on my new 1989 Ranger Bass Boat. Absolutely one of the finest engines I ever owned. The DC engine had the domed piston like the CF, unlike the Loopers, but had a hole added to the side of the...

    85hp Merc?

The 3 cylinder is probably Loop Charged allowing for increased fuel economy. I will say this about my experiences with Cross Flow fueling methods vs Loop Charging methods......the CFs I owned were bullet proof and easy to start after sitting up between outings. My loopers not so.....a lot more...

How can I make my Tracker 40 HP faster?

That engine height is excellent. The L in the ELPT identification is indicative of the long (20") mid section.....best I can tell you have a 20" transom in that boat so the height is OK fine!!! While I am here, the second picture shows the lever that moves the carb butterflies as the lever...

1978 50hp Mercury timing and synchronization

Move your throttle lever back and forth and watch what moves inside the engine compartment. Usually at least one of the levers that move....one is for carb butterfly control and the other is for timing changes, sets the engine timing to set the idle speed (on some engines like mine) and the...

    85hp Merc?

I bought about a 1974 85 4 cylinder with PTT new. One of the finest engines I ever owned. One thing that stands out is in the winter I would pull up to the ramp, dip my trailer "properly" start the engine...immediate thing, and back off and secure, put my truck/trailer in the parking lot and...

Prop barrel slightly smaller than the gearcase

I replied to your post but it wound up several listings below.

Prop barrel slightly smaller than the gearcase

I think the physics behind this is similar to ported props. As soon as you reach a certain speed, water pressure from new water forces the exhaust to hug the hub, rather than being spread out over the blades like is the case at lower speeds where slip is significant.

Interesting. I don't know what I expected to see but apparently that works.

Prop barrel slightly smaller than the gearcase

You mind posting a picture of that? I find that most interesting....in short, what does the engine do with its exhaust gasses as a result?
