    Post some ( 5 or 6 ) of the powerhead.----The 100 HP version was marketed in 79 / 80.-----Then again from 88 to 94.----And it could be that the later midsection was put on an older motor.----Or an older lower unit put on a newer motor.-----This is what happens with numerous owners !

    Gears must be precisely positioned / fitted using shims.-----Failing to do so and checking with bluing could lead to a " dynamic halt " of the gearcase.

    Fuel pump diaphragm checked?----Reed valves checked ?-----Flywheel key checked ?----Perhaps throttle plates are opening too early.

    Still do not know what motor you have !---Crossflow V-4 never offered the S.L.O.W. feature I believe.

    You start with a compression test.----Post the actual values you get on this 45 year old fine ( when new ) motor.

    On many motors the water coming from the tell tale does NOT go through the engine block !----You could have internal blockage of water jackets.

    Well----1985 was the last production year for the 140 HP crossflow.----Post pictures of powerhead or post model #.-----Hard to help folks if motor details are vague I think.

    It is a looper design.-----Perhaps it is going into ---S. L. O. W.----Have you checked water pump impeller?

    I doubt you can find just the pinion.-----These are installed as MATCHED sets.

    How did you determine it has " lots of power " ?-----Year or serial # ?----Post actual compression test values.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" on each lead ?----Water pump serviced ?-----Oil injection in service?----Mixing gas / oil at 50:1 in the tank?.----Overheat horn tested?-----Slipping...

    ???----That does not work around the " great lakes "-----If you are 20 / 30 miles from a safe port on a sailboat and you have 1 hr warning !!
