    Gear ratio is different between a 1990 model and much newer motors.-----You have to be very careful when swapping newer parts into an older gearcase.----Model # on the motor that hit the rock.-----I tell folks that a GPS unit to tell you where the rocks might be is very cheap !!!

    It is a passage way.----- The fresh air / fuel mix is compressed under the piston.-----It then flows into the cylinder via that passage way.----Please study the way that a simple 2 stroke works.

    What are the issues with your motor?-----Most shops now use a dynamometer and test props are not easy to find.

    Black scuff marks on cylinder walls

    You should remove the 4 bypass comers to look at pistons / rings.----That might offer some clues.----Post pictures of pistons / rings through intake ports.----This would be the cooler side of the motor.---Damage is often worse on the exhaust side.----You have new gaskets.----Very simple to do...

    The 3 cylinder models went to " fine spline " starting in 1989 model year.

    How did it run for you last season.---That motor would come apart here for inspection.---There is damage to piston rings,----Unless it was a recent patch-up job.------Or you can run it and hope for the best.-----

    The copper tube MUST be installed in the midsection BEFORE installing the lower unit.-----Water in a test bucket MUST be 6" above the impeller.

    ???----If coil generates 3/8" spark , you should have spark at the plug boots.----From 1008 miles away I believe there is an issue with cap or rotor.-----Or boots where wires screw into the cap.

    Serial # is ?--If it is a 2 stroke ,there is no EXHAUST valve going to the cylinder.----And no head gasket either.

    Load test your battery.----Inspect battery cables.-----Take starter apart for inspection / ohm test on armature.----What name / part # is on the replacement starter ?-----Many Mercury starters look the same, but they are not all the same.
