    The centering nose on the V8 gimbal housings that lines up and centers the inner plate is larger, while it may be possible to open the hole on your inner plate the exhaust flange on the V8 is different from the in line housing.

    Be sure that the machine shop mills the exhaust/intake side of the head also. It looks like at one point the engine overheated, be sure to keep a watch on the cooling system. Seal the head bolt threads with either #2 Permatex or a similar product.

    This may not be an issue but was your original engine left to right rotation? Quite often single engine straight inboard engines were right hand rotation and if your engine was right hand you will have to reset the pump in the transmission, swap the propeller along with the starter.

    Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

    You can always change the gimbal bearing and since it is smooth it should last. The coupling is worth changing now with that many hours. That is something that you never know when it will leave you like propeller hubs are known to do.

    Some flywheels are made so that the ring gear can be on the front or rear depending whether for a stern drive or a MIE application. Is your boat a stern drive or a straight inboard ?

    It would not surprise me if the propeller is corroded on the shaft and the P O tried to pry it off causing the damage to the case. If that is what has happened you will probably have to take it to a shop that can remove the propeller and the gear case can be repaired by welding on a patch. Also...

    One other option is to rent/borrow a engine lift or even a patient lift to hold the drive in position using the dipstick threaded hole with a lifting ring and some chain.

    When I was referring to grounding on the 400 drive in the picture OMC also said it was for galvanic purposes and also Is why it was retained.

    The stainless steel wire from the upper cover to the pivot cap is also part of the grounding protection. On electric shift drives it also assured a negative ground to the shift coils.
