OMC to Merc swap in 1996 Sundowner 195

The joint venture drives are the exact same as a Volvo SX of the same year. Only difference is that the OMC version was painted OMC charcoal & has an OMC model # plate but if you look close it says made by Volvo Penta marine products LLC, Lexington Ky. That was the factory that OMC built for...

OMC to Merc swap in 1996 Sundowner 195

If you can compare the harnesses & find out what the extra wire is for with Merc you might be able to add that wire assuming all the rest have the same function.

Thinking about converting surge brakes to electric - Tri-Axle Trailer

Agreed that electric control should be better than the reflexive action of a surge system esp with that much weight is involved.

Volvo Penta motor parts needed for a 7.4 GI PEFS

eBay can be a source for NLA parts as is a site called NLA Marine. However used parts is a crapshoot If it were me I would: Get a cast iron 4bbl intake for the 454 V8 Edelbrock or Holley 4bbl 750 CFM carb Low pressure electric fuel pump & safety switch & wiring Delco EST distributor That will...

Thinking about converting surge brakes to electric - Tri-Axle Trailer

What I’m wondering is this….what’s the total load in terms of weight, my boat weighed quite a bit more than I was led to believe…not about 3,000 lbs more like 4,000. Tie down/Dexter make a 16,000 lb capacity actuator but Titan makes a 20,000 lb one. Perhaps upgrading the actuator to the highest...

Thinking about converting surge brakes to electric - Tri-Axle Trailer

What is your hydraulic surge actuator rated at? Just curious….

Ticking/clicking noise Mercruiser alpha one 2002

Sounds like an exhaust leak or a blown head gasket. Check the motor oil for water mixing in, if none, that's good, it could be a blown gasket between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head.

Fresh water corrosion and anode choices…

www.boatzincs.com has some tech data on this, they sell a reference electrode to help measure if your anodes are giving enough protection. Also keep in mind that if you have a stainless prop it adds to the corrosion potential if the lower unit is left in the water. that's why early B-IIIs with...

Fresh water corrosion and anode choices…

That’s what it looks like (stray current) are you near docks or boats plugged into shore power? Your OB should be tilted up when not in use.

Fresh water corrosion and anode choices…

That’s more than slightly acidic water! Was it left in the water in a hot marina? That’s a lot worse than my Cobra outdrive looks after being moored in salt water for 20 seasons! And you need to use the correct anodes for freshwater which is magnesium not alu or zinc. I use zinc in salt water &...

    Exhaust manifolds, time to replace?

Agreed in fact when I do repower I am going to see if I can adapt the Merc Dry joint to my OMC/Volvo Y pipe. Might work because both used elbows with a 7* down slope angle.

    Exhaust manifolds, time to replace?

I just used heater hose make sure you don’t make ‘em too short so they don’t kink & restrict flow. 3/4” inside diameter IIRC.

    Exhaust manifolds, time to replace?

The water flow out of the stat housing is not 100% equal and on mine the (OMC/Volvo style) the starboard is a bit hotter both on the trailer & in the water. What’s more important is how hot they get after coming off plane

    Exhaust manifolds, time to replace?

I’ve been on the hull truth website a long time & it is a fishing/Fla/Gulf Coast group and are very much pro out board. What I see is that you can buy a new OB but don’t expect more than 10-15 years out of it. The blocks are cast alu with coated or sleeved cyls. Open deck with free standing...

    Exhaust manifolds, time to replace?

Agreed I’d definitely replace that hose. I have heard the same thing about blocks not rusting out here from 2 different marine mechanics here in LI when I asked about closed cooling for a new or reman engine. However the heads can rust thru this I have heard of. When I replaced mine due to...

Also you’ll need a good quality marine rebuild kit for the Rochester carb. Might also need to replace that old mechanical fuel pump

    Four Winns hull strength

I live right next to 2 large bays in Huntington Long Island we have many large boats as big as 50-60’, wind and tides. I would not buy any open bow boat in the future even self bailing I want a closed bow for sure. It’s just how it is. If you’re out in the Sound there is commercial traffic tugs...

    Went with the Durango R/T

You won't regret it, the Hemi & ZF 8 speed pulls like the Super Chief. Don't listen to the nay sayers who seem to think you can ONLY tow a 20' boat with a full size pick up. Nonsense, the Durango or Grand Cherokee are more than capable, just make sure your tongue weight is right and the trailer...
