    That's the answer. We have all become wusses, because Detroit has convinced us to buy their most expensive tow vehicles. My first towcar was a 1961 Mercury Comet with 3 on the tree and an 85 HP 144 CID 6 cylinder engine. Towed a 16 footer with a 60 on the back just fine.

    Its not lack of use, its lack of care. Gas tanks stored indoors will last almost forever. At worst $5 worth of new gaskets may be all kit would need.

    Metal boat tanks rust out too. If you ever had a gas tank rust out on a lawn mower, it wasn't taken care of very well. Nevertheless, pop the old boat beside the house without a cover all year long. The metal tank will crap out, but it will last longer than a sun exposed plastic one.

    Download the gas tank supplier's catalog and simply buy repair fittings. You need the elbow and gasket. I just did that very thing with my Tempo tank.

    Locking outboard while boat is on the trailer

    The clamp handles should have a hole in the end. Tighten them so that the 2 handles point toward each other and then put an ordinary HD armored padlock thru the 2 holes. It won't stop a dedicated thief, but it'll make one less dedicated to simply pass it up.

    A few years ago I sold my 1984 boat. We owned it for 35 years. I waxed it every Fall, and usually once in between. It had NEVER been buffed since it didn't need it. When i sold it the hull looked like brand new.

    Funny thing. My son had that same boat and it lunched and retrieved like a dream. Of course, his Dad had 45 years experience and taught him well. 99% chance you have the trailer too deep. Drive it on and you won't have a problem.
