    Back drag came out in 1975 and was used at least to 1989 if it were no good they would have dropped it very quickly. I would think that the quality of the oil would have more to do with damaging the motor. I have a 1975 850 it has BD and no signs of internal damage so that's my experience.

    Well if you start the motor without a charged battery hooked up you will destroy the rectifier (although it might be done already). Just running a motor without understanding the systems is why they're damaged and scrapped; like putting auto oil in the gas.
