Do you have the points disk for setting the point phasing? It's important. If you have a tach you can find the right prop to give you 4800-5200 rpm.

There are 2 bearings in that assembly that have gone bad; the exploded view shows them These instructions tell how to remove the shaft but you must 1: Not to try to remove the rotor it's molded on 2: Be very careful when removing the disk or you can break the trigger coil off the housing (the...

'84 Mercury 115 inline six, Long to short mid unit swap question

I have a 1960 Merc 700 dockbuster and it pulled tubes/other boats/skiers etc.; ran it for hours and 15 years and didn't "bust" any docks - of course I know how to operate a boat, used a good battery and changed spark plugs once in a while! It was retired running 6 yrs.ago and it now sits in my...

Here's a diagram for the single cable that shows how the switches are wired there are 2 positions in each start mode; push the button straight down to activate the starter and forward and down to activate the choke and starter. That box is a collector's item for old Merc guys.

Mercury 500 Thunderbolt - Sat for a very long time.

Since the battery only operates the starter you just use a charger (solar or A.C.) once in a while to keep the battery up. You are going to have to replace the tilt tube to use a rack and pinion steering system. I think you should remove the powerhead and check the upper shift shaft for...

    Water in lower unit

The oil and water have separated after sitting so long, was there any rust in the water? The seals might be bad; the washers under the fill/drain screws might be bad or missing - there is also a seal at the shift shaft or the driveshaft is pitted and lets water in. Remove the water pump base...

    1967 Mercury 500 "no spark"

Here's a page from the manual that will aid your repairs. The rotor should be "glued" on I use a bit of Permatex gasket shellac, this will hold it on but allow easy removal later; which you will have to do in the future to reset the points.

    Warning about upper shift shafts!

Anyone who owns a 70's and earlier motor should take a good look at the upper shift shaft, I fixed mine 5 yrs. ago by welding in a piece to "jump" the corroded area and this year it failed leaving me without reverse; so I had a guy weld it but it had twisted and I couldn't get it to line up...

1968 Mercury 110 (9.8) flooding on idle - any idea why?

Here's the proper method for setting the needle/float; after you reinstall the carb run the engine at approx 1200 rpm in gear and adjust the low speed needle until the engine runs smoothly.

    Merc 85hp 1973

Only thing different is the coil shape; someone has altered (maybe the switch is for the choke) or replaced the control box: it should be this one, I would replace any bad wires even if it means buying a new harness(es) a fire onboard can be fatal!
