Boat stalled, later found oil in Bilge... help!

As S D Said about the timing cover. When the engine was painted and with the harmonic balancer mounted they never received 1 drop of paint under it and also the area where the metal is spot welded on the lower flange. If you hurt the crankshaft it is no big deal to have it turned undersize and...

Mercruiser 3.0: Dead cylinder? very sluggish!

You probably have a worn out cam lobe. The lubricants today are not compatible with a flat tappet store cam. You have to either obtain oil with the additives or add the additives lead substitute to the oil. Sierra Marine has the oil with the additives and you can also purchase the oil from...

replacing water intake hose and found this:

If you raise the drive and push the drive over to the port side you will see how the hose is connected to the out side of the plastic tube with a hose clamp. The tube is sealed in the transom plate with a grommet under the flange with the 2 bolts.

replacing water intake hose and found this:

You might be able to gently insert a tapered tool or wood dowel stick to carefully re shape it. To replace the plastic tube you will need to pull the drive and bell housing also would be a good time to replace the bellows and water hose.

    OMC 2.3l Lima Engine Timing

When the crankshaft balancer is at the TDC mark is the piston also at that point? Where is the rotor pointing at that point in relation to the #1 spark plug terminal?

1975 351cu 233hp Mercruiser, riser block off plates or not?

Burning out a exhaust bellow on the same side without having a overheat condition points to a restriction in the elbow/riser itself. It could be either some rust slag or even a faulty casting causing a hot spot.

    OMC 2.3l Lima Engine Timing

You cannot beat a dwell meter for the most accurate way to set the points. The way I found best is to spin the engine with the plugs out and the coil wire grounded. If the coil wire is not grounded you will notice a different reading which will not be correct.

    Backfiring

Is the new carburetor the correct marine model for your engine? What was wrong with the original carburetor? Back firing through the carburetor is a sign of fouled spark plugs and as A D said from a over rich mixture.

    OMC 2.3l Lima Engine Timing

The first thing I would do is go over the timing belt replacement. I have changed the belts on Pintos with that engine and sometime the belt will jump 1 tooth while trying to set the tension. I have had the same thing happen on Volvos.

    No spark 2.3l omc

The voltage is resisted before the coil and should read around 8 volts when the engine is running. With the points closed and not running good ignition parts may show 0 volts with the ignition on. Be sure to only use quality points and condensers from either original OMC parts suppliers or...

How do I add gear oil to multiple fill plugs on OMC stern drive.

You may have a drain and a fill on the intermediate, I believe 78 and up 800-400 models have the drain on the intermediate. As Southkogs said the same oil in the entire drive platform. There are Zerk fittings under the rubber bumpers where the drive mounts, inside the hole on the forward section...

    Fuel - Pickup, Anti-Siphon, Fuel-Water Separator

The suction tube un screws from the elbow. Those filters in that tube are real trouble makers. Punch it out and pitch it.

1987 4.3 OMC Alternator with 1 Wire Issue

Your engine should have a resistor wire in the harness. With the ignition on and the points are open you will read 12 volts. With the engine running you should be reading around 8 volts on the Bat side of the coil. The 1 wire alternator is a lot cheaper to repair than the original one that...

    1983 Omc 3.8 V6

If the solenoids are both good then you will have to pull the tilt motor. If you have experience with this type of motor you should be able to get it going again by opening it up and freeing the brushes. Be careful when you remove the motor not to lose the nylon washer on the motor shaft and...

    1983 Omc 3.8 V6

Are you asking about the actual drive tilt or the hydraulic trim that is under the engine? If the boat has been laid up for a long time then sometimes the brushes in the electric motors get stuck and that will keep them from operating. If the boat has been stored outside it may have gotten...

Mercruiser 3.0: Dead cylinder? very sluggish!

You could be having water incursion from the exhaust manifold riser In the rear #4 cylinder. Connect a garden hose to the front of the manifold where the thermostat housing discharges. With the plugs out spin the engine and look if droplets of water appear.

    1983 Omc 3.8 V6

Check the fuses near the top rear of the engine. They are 50 amp. Trace one of the #10 red wires from the main solenoid and you will find them. Sometimes the holders get loose or there is corrosion built up.

Mercruiser 470, hero to zero. Timing chain jumped?

When you are checking the ignition remove the 2 screws holding the breaker plate to inspect the centrifugal advance weights and spring mounts. Also make sure that the rotor shaft does not have any excessive play. I have seen distributors worn to the point that the engine would not go over 2k...
