    Old 2-Cycle Mercury Oil Leak

Probably time to rebuild things like carbs and new fuel and oil hoses ! If your engine has been maintained, it isn't old, just needs freshened up a little. I have a 1992, looks and runs like new. As mentioned before, when the gas evaporates it leaves oil residue.

    Engine power loss

Use the octane fuel your motor is rated for. Using high test fuel in a motor rated for 87 is a waste of money and can cause a loss of power ! Clean out your fuel tank, get rid if all old fuel. Be sure you have a fuel filter in place and change it every year. Use fuel additives for storage...

    25 HP 4 stroke vs 40 HP 2 stroke???

Newer motor is bound to perform better, but...if both motors were at peak performance, the 2 stroke would leave it in its wake. My neighbor and I have similar 16' aluminum boats. His a tracker and mine a Sylvan both with side consoles. He has a 50 hp Honda 4 stroke and I have a 40 up Merc 2...

    Prop, or Engine Issue?

Those were great motors, owned two over many years of boating ! By all means check over your motor, should be done every year anyway, comp test, spark gap jump test and a can of engine tune or deadpan on occasion to keep thing working well. What do spark plugs look like...if clean then good...

EX Lube bearings on new to me trailer, how often to physically check bearings?

Depending on how much my boat gets used, at least every other year the hub gets opened and inspected. About once a month, I slip a jack under the axle and spin the wheel assembly to feel for any drag or rough spots and add a shot of grease. When I detect an issue, it gets addressed quickly...

Why is finding information on boats so difficult?

Perhaps boating is not a good hobby for you, you might look for something with less expense and work to maintain.

Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

See if you can find left hand drill bits, they run in reverse and when they bite in, they often unscrew the bolt ! To get started, get a " center drill" of the same dia as the thread dia. The center drill is designed to help stay centered in the hole and make a drill point starting hole in the...

    Leak in aluminum boat

No disrespect intended, but I would never use silicone. Reason being is that nothing else will stick to that surface when a future repair is needed for that area. In my younger days we used silicone because there was no real history about the stuff. Today there are many better, longer lasting...

    Older Boats

Wait until you see the labor in fixing a newer four stroke...a friend from a local big dealership says they don't fix much on newer motors, just exchange for a rebuilt powerhead. Minor repairs that can be diagnosed on a computer is all the shop does. When a serious issue arrises, swap out...

    Older Boats

Curious here, where are these places that no longer work on two stroke out boards ? With the exception of our local BP store, most all other marine repair places are happy to work on two stroke outboards. Now, some of the really old stuff no...to hard to locate parts, but anything 80's and...

    Older Boats

Old fiberglass boats on the ocean is a scary thought . The wood skeleton inside the glass rots and weakens the hull. Much time, effort and money to rebuild.

    Leak in aluminum boat

How much effort do you want to put into this project ?? Are the rivets in an area where you can access top and bottom of the rivet ? Re- bucking is not that hard if you have acess to the rivet and a friend on the other side of the rivet. If you do that, it should be finished with gluvit on...

Too much wind and rain in my face

People make bigger/ better windshields all the time. Lexan is easy to work with if bends and curves are needed. Without pics, we are all in the dark.

    Towed some Folk

Done that a few times over my 60 plus years of boating, lucky for me, never had to be towed !! Last summer I towed in a couple fellows out on there maiden voyage of their brand new boat ! Only owned it for three days, first outing and the new fancy 150 hp do all, new fangled, all electronic...

Can I grease gimball zerc while boat is in the lake

All the issues in greasing is a way of the unit telling you, " take off the out drive winter for a thorough inspection and greasing then you have nothing to worry about each season. With the out drive off, you can see when the bearings are filled and running over as well as getting a good feel...
