Need help IDing my first boat

The motor that's on the boat now weighs 60 pounds. A comparable current technology 4-stroke Mercury OB in the same weight range would be a 6 HP, at 56 pounds. If a new engine is upgraded to electric start, the battery alone will weigh an extra +-50 pounds.

Need help IDing my first boat

A charging system means electric start and thus a heavier motor and a battery is required. The engine will keep the battery charged and even run the lights, but it won't have any impact on the battery once you run the trolling motor. They use more juice than the engine can handle. I have one...

    Trust the dealer?

I got my first boat at age 19. My hourly wage back then would buy 3 1/2 gallons of gas. A few years later, after graduating from the University, my hourly salary would buy me 10 1/2 gallons of gas Today retired, my annual income / 52 / 40 would buy me 11 gallons of gas. It's all relative...

Need help IDing my first boat

The tinny in my signature is much much deeper and wider than the one in this thread. The model is "R" for rugged duty. It performs OK with 2 adults and 2 kids and will even plane with the same little 9.5. It is rated at 25 HP, so I put one on. OMG, squirrely. The biggest I could run safely...

Can anyone help me identify this boat model

The shape and style, and certainly the condition, do not indicate its as old as 78. (at least IMHO) Certainly drives can and often do get replaced. Also, registrations get lost and boats get re-registered incorrectly in states where the rules are not too rigid. What is certain is the HIN...

Can anyone help me identify this boat model

The metal plate may or may not have a dent in it, but the embossed HIN on the hull's transom clearly is M791. Or do my eyes deceive me?

    Trust the dealer?

Not nowadays, but it was ALWAYS that way. OMC owner's manuals always referred to the term "cruise throttle". When at WOT you would merely back off the throttle a bit until you heard a slight reduction in engine speed. At that point you were saving a lot of fuel, but the speed reduction was...

Need help IDing my first boat

Yes, for sure. I can see the pics very clearly. And I don't need info re. capacity. The 9.5 you have on the back is the perfect engine for that boat. Adding all the amenities you desire would be foolish. That little boat is suitable for 2 people, a tackle box and a couple poles. Adding...

    Foldable Boats

Google Porta-Bote. I think they are still in business. It might be good for a very small lake, but I personally wouldn't want to power it in waves. I only recall ever seeing one in operation, and that was 30 or more years ago. Kinda scary to me....LOL.

Can anyone help me identify this boat model

The HIN on the transom AND the SN on the interior metal plate both show the last 2 letters to be 91. That boat was NOT made in 1978.

    1966 Starcraft

Based on the pics it looks like too nice a boat to sell. If you do you'll get only a fraction of what its really worth. If you simply don't want it, or don't want to go boating any more, that's one thing. But, if you are only selling it because it won't start, at least give the points thing a...

    Trust the dealer?

My old Starcraft Utility weighed 450# (deluxe model with floor) and it would reach 25 mph with a 25 HP 2-stroke and 2 people. Propped right, your 20 will "perform" OK, but not at your desired speed. Go with a 30.

Transom heights....why are some lower than others?

Transom heights are 15, 20 or 25" (+-1) and vary depending upon the height of the motor the boat is designed for. Some, for example, may be purchased in either configuration, and are suited to people who already have a motor and want a boat to use it with. If a second step is used, its...

Need help identifying this inboard boat - anyone can help?

Its a SeaRay, circa 1966. The railing and Plexiglas windshield are a dead giveaway, plus you can see the molded side spot where the logo would have been. Obviously, it also has a lot of other odd hardware added on.

The chirp is a transom mount on my Whaler. The thru-hull on my SeaRay is not. I was just commenting how well a thru-mount works.

    Rec gas prices???

Haven't had a donut in a long time. Just stopped in a donut shop while driving thru PA and they were $2.49 each. When I was in grammar school they would let us out at lunch time if the weather was nice. I often walked across the street to the bakery. They were a nickle then.

    Transducer installation query

Aha! Never heard of that before. I just looked up one for my Raymarine chirp downscan and the cost was outrageous. After all, the spray is out back and it really doesn't hurt anything. Nevertheless, it piqued my interest. Are there low priced generic models available? My SeaRay has a...

    Transducer installation query

I realize lots of people do that and are satisfied. But, have you tried it both ways and compared performance? It just seems to me that the hull and epoxy would somewhat reduce sensitivity.

10 mm below is going to cause a roostertail. You might not like it. OTOH, that might just be low enough that the weld won't bother you. Most mounts are adjustable up and down. Try it, adjust it, set it where you get good results. I have a chirp transducer on one boat, factory mounted, and...
