    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

Rectangular Port Gaskets on an Oval Port Head. Happens a lot, as a lot of people don't know that there were the Two Types. For use below 5000 the Smaller Ports are Better. This reinforces my Idea that Mercury planned on those engines likely being entered in Racing Events that required Stock...

1958 Johnson 35 hp fuel pump rebuild

Without those parts it certainly won't pump. It is a simple device, and goes together quite easily, here is a Cutaway from an actual OMC service manual from the late 50s. Even the Service Manual doesn't have any detailed instructions on Disassembly-Reassembly. There is error; At the bottom...

#s 14 and 17? Look at it this way, if both weren't needed, why would the Engineers put both in?

    What engine in new boat

My 5.7 came with the 500cfm(370 when flowed like a 4bbl) 2bbl. It was too small as I was seeing about 4.5 - 5" of Vacuum at WOT. With the 650 it was 1.0" the Secondaries weren't fully open, but it didn't need all 650cfm a 5.7 spinning 5000 isn't going to use more than 415cfm at 80% VE Gained a...

    What engine in new boat

If an engine was equiped with a Q-Jet, it would be misconstrued that even a 307 needed 750 cfm, which is what the small Q-Jet could flow at full capacity Merc also used a very poor Adapter to mount a Squarebore Carb on a Spreadbore intake. The Primaries on the Carb were larger than holes in the...

    What engine in new boat

I used the Holley 650 Spreadbore on a 5.7, more than enough, by quite a bit, for a 5.7 spinning 5000. The Holley 2bbl500(370 when flow rated like a 4bbl) is pretty much Perfect for a 5 liter. A 600 would barely crack the Secondairies...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

It doesn't take much time for a Lobe to be wiped. Once the Hardened Layer is compromised, the Lack of EP additives in the Oil, allow the Spring Pressure to do the rest. Myself, I would have put a Roller Cam/Lifters in, with them, you can get away with just about any Oil

    Help prop an old boat?

Those are only Charts. And based on my 50+ yrs of Propping, I feel a lot of them are a little Happy/Optomistic Pitchwise. 19" would be a far better choice than a 23, unless the boat, motor, gear, fuel, and driver add up to less than 700lbs

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

Not going to be fun, installing the New Cam, as it will not be easy to keep the Lobes from damaging the Cam Bearings as the Cam is removed/inserted. I don't even like installing the Cam with the engine on an Engine stand, prefer doing it with the engine standing on it rear, so as to just...

Old Evinrude question, Can anyone help?

This for a 57 35hp. unfortunately the Site doesn't provide for 1956 models I'm quite certain that the Gearcase and internals stayed the same between the 1956 thru 1965 model yrs for the Big Twin engine...

At a loss and looking for some help with a 1985 Johnson 9.9 having starting and idle issues after winter storage

Welcome to iboats Bubbles in the Fuel Line, indicate a Leak, allowing Air in. Eventually the Carb is starved for fuel and the engine croaks WOT Idle? What exactly do you mean by that?

    1985 30 hp johnson ( any good?)

Well it is 38 yrs old, so depending on how well it was Maintained. it might be good, or it might not be. Boats that old often have problems with any Wood in the Boat(floors, Transom), the engine, Do a Compression Test, Check that it has a Spark that can jump a 3/8" gap. Put a set of muffs on it...
