    What type fuel hose?

I suspect a lot of posters here have never had to deal with an Insurance Company when a boat has a fire... If any part that needs USCG Cert, doesn't have it, kiss your claim goodbye

1976 Mercury 500 only runs for a few seconds

To look up the correct Parts list, I would need a Serial #. When you cleaned the Carbs, did you remove what look like little Frost Plugs, and get the area behind them, all cleaned out? New Discs come with the Carb Kits.

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

454 engine spinning 5000 rpm can only inhale 660 cfm of air at 100% VE. At 78% VE the number is 515 cfm. Any Mercrusier Engine designated for Racing would certainly need a bigger Carb, and if the Class Rules stated the Engine had to use a carb that came from the Factory, then yes they would have...

    Help! Won’t start when hot.

Actually a very poor Design, as it provides Conflicting Info, when an Overheat Alarm is sounding, The Tell Tale should be located further down the Cooling System, like maybe above the Top Cylinder(s)

    Help! Won’t start when hot.

If the engine died because it was hot, it likely occurred because the Piston and Cylinder ran out of Clearance. Lack of Clearance is what causes Scuffing/Scoring of the Pistons and Cylinder Walls

Compression, Spark, and Fuel are all needed at the proper time, and the correct quantity for the engine to run. Does it have a Spark that can jump a 5/16" gap? Is Fuel getting to the Carb? Is the Float set correctly? Have you done a Compression Test? If yes, what are Numbers. If No, why Not?
