for SBC's there are 4 different starters
direct drive vs PMGR
staggered pattern (168 tooth flywheel) vs straight pattern (153 tooth flywheel)
your 1985 originally came with a heavy direct drive starter go with PMGR.
takes about 3 minutes to pull the inner fender liner. not sure how long it takes to pull the fender. however If I recall, you could screw a bit of hardware cloth over the opening.
there is also a cabin air filter.
air intake is just above that, and I believe runs to the fender. I think I recall seeing it when I pulled the fender liner on the GMC to get to the starter.
without running the coolant thru the drive, you will overheat it.

even on mercruiser alpha when you switch to the crank driven pump, you must keep the pump in the leg to keep water circulating

A 12 foot boat is supper supper small. As in 1 person and a dog small. Plus it's narrow, so you need to move weight around as you found out

usually the high-stressed fasteners for the bow eye, stern eye and the engine mounting are 316 condition B
Standard 18-8 or 304 or 316 are generally not strong enough

the boats from Minnesota where the 4 seasons are Nearly Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and bad sledding. it probably spent most of its time in the garage waiting for the ice to thaw.
bayliners generally are not fishing boats. they are a get wet and sit in the sun with a bucket of suds boat.
you may have to custom make a mount for the bow of your boat.
