    Bottom paint on Aluminum Crestliner

Aluminum hulls require special antifouling paint. If you use a antifouling paint intended for fiberglass, it usually contains copper. Copper plus aluminum makes a battery that dissolves the aluminum.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

As you have predicted, it is very much easier to remove the exhaust covers, with the powerhead removed. The lower cowl really gets in the way, and makes the use of an impact driver or socket wrench just about impossible.

    98 Johnson leaking hydraulic fluid.

In your picture 1 there is a manual tilt lock. Underneath that is a grease fitting for swivel. You may need to tap it down with a plastic hammer.

    98 Johnson leaking hydraulic fluid.

With the motor at full tilt, the lock should rotate to contact the transom clamp. Mine was not as corroded as yours, but took a couple of taps from a plastic hammer to move it, since it had not been used for a long time.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

The inner exhaust water jacket cover and exhaust baffle can rot out and leak water into the cylinders. On a fresh water motor, this takes a real long time. On a salt water motor, say 20 years. However, you do not want to take it apart and see that you need one of these, and it not be...

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

Merc850 Depending on the year of the motor, and possibly the HP, some of those head water jacket bolts have nuts, or could use nuts, after you drill them out. There are a few on his motor near the bottom that are blind. The rest will need nuts or retap. That job is a real PIA. Jtexnm, if you...

Will self leveling trim tabs cure slow speed wandering ?

You can cure the boat of that. Make small steering corrections, and eventually you will get a feel for how to drive it at slow speed/

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

Water out the exhaust relief is normal. Water out the grates above the antiventilation plate is a good thing. That is where it is supposed to come out. Water around the spark plugs happens. Dry out the area and put some silicone caulk around the spark plug and it will stop leaking...

    70s merc 850 85 hp mercontroller

The mechanicals (shifter and throttle) of the newer Mercury controls will work just fine. The wiring is also compatible, but the connection to the motor is quite different. The newer boat harnesses have a round 8 pin plug, with 2 bullet connectors for trim and tilt. The extra wire is for...

    1976 Mercury Tilt/Trim Controls

That is the way it is supposed to work. Middle button is trim up. Trim stops when the trim limit switch on the starboard trim bracket opens. There is a stainless steel "finger" that pushes the switch open or shut. It is adjustable, and is supposed to open as outboard trims up to the point...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

A little turpentine cuts the old dried grease quite well. Quicksilver makes a excellent product for steering rods. It is a bit thinner than marine grease. It is special lube 101.

    Quick question

Definitely premix until you are sure the injection is working. Look for an oil tank in the bilge. The OMS (injection ) pump on under the airbox, in the front of the motor. It is a black round pump with a rectangular front. Look it on the crowleymarine web site. The OMS pump could be used...

    What is Primary Pickup?

You should also buy a caliper, so you can set the timing pointer correctly. The sequence is to remove all spark plugs, and measure from top of #1 piston at TDC to cylinder head. Now add that measurement to .464 inches, and rotate the piston until the piston is recessed by that sum. Now...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

Todays 2 cycle oil has a dye in it to color it. That yellow fluid could be gasoline mixed with Straight weight non detergent motor oil, as was done in the 60s. It had a typical motor oil color, and looks kinda yellow when diluted with gasoline. Drain the carbs and see what color the fuel is.

    What is Primary Pickup?

Primary pickup is a synchronization of the spark advance and the carb throttle plate. On the Merc V6 motors, the carbs should start to open when the timing is 4-9* ATDC. Max spark advance is 21*BTDC on those V6 Mercs. You want to get these settings correct or you can damage the motor.

Mercury 850 thunderbolt 1974 gearbox check

You can remove the six 5/16 bolts that ring the flywheel nut. That removes the outer flywheel. Set the motor to TDC before removing the outer flywheel. The stator will come off with a allen wrench. Expect the wiring to be bad up to the stator. Dingbat, despite what your regulation says...

Mercury 850 thunderbolt 1974 gearbox check

It is a bad idea to put a fuse on the charging wire. If it blows or has a bad connection with the engine running it will destroy the rectifier. I am also not sure what would happen to the switchbox, if the fuse blew with the engine running, as the battery regulates the voltage. You might...
