    470 stock mount water/fuel filter

Going to install a fuel/water filter tomorrow. Did these come stock with this engine, and if so, where were they mounted?

    stupid fuel filter questions

Re: stupid fuel filter questions That makes sense. I was wondering about that, although the pic is still wrong. Here's what my old filter looked like, btw

    stupid fuel filter questions

So after having some what seemed to be fuel issues last week, I rebuilt my spare Carb, got a fuel/water filter, and a new fuel filter. When I took the old one off, it was smooshed on one side--i'm guessing it hasn't been effective. 2 questions: 1. Which way does the hole on the filter go...

    Fuel/Water Separator Kit for 470?

Had some weird bogging issues at 2500 rpm last time out. Pulled the carb and plan on disassemble/inspect before next time out. Figured now was a good time to install the water separator that I've been meaning to do for 4 years  Can anyone tell me which kit I need? Looking at this...

    Bogging between 2k-2500 rpm

So of course I spoke too soon about the boat running great. I've had it out everyday for the last week after the alt conversion and have gone at least 100 miles on it, including some slalom skiing without any problems. Today after fishing (a few croaker and a couple of good sized cats) I...

Do I finally need an alternator conversion?

Re: Do I finally need an alternator conversion? Just a quick update. Got everything installed today. Breezeworks kit fit nicely for the most part, took about 1.5 hours for the install. Was able to locate the expansion tank to the front of the head, which I think is pretty slick. Putting out...

    Yearly repair/maintenance costs?

Just curious on what would be considered reasonable repair/maintenance costs on your rigs. On first splash this spring, I'm already in for: Plugs/Wires: $50 Carb Kit, misc gaskets: $85 Valve Spring: $20 Alternator Kit: $315 Manifold machining: $45 Oil/gear lube/filter: $30 (?) Starter: $160...

470 Alt Conversion, relocating expansion tank

Finally pulled the trigger on the breezeworks conversion, I'll be installing it next week. I opted for the low mount kit, just because that seems to be what the cool kids use, and for some reason the alternator just looks like it belongs lower. However, that means I'll need to relocate my...

Do I finally need an alternator conversion?

So finally got the boat in the water after another trying summerization. Rebuilt carb seems to have fixed my rich starts and stalling on acceleration. Noticed though that the battery isn't charging. I'm getting 18v (dc though, shouldn't it be ac?) at each of the yellow/red wires. Ammeter in...

    Source for a PMGR starter/470?

In the market for a replacement starter for my 470 with a build in solenoid. I've checked armatureserviceco.com and somethingreman.com as referenced in earlier posts--doesn't seem like they're available any more. Anyone have any idea of where to get one? Do these cross-reference with other...

    starter toast? 470

Well, fresh oil, gear lube, new carb, replaced broken valve spring, resurfaced exhaust manifold. Finally got it back together, turned the key, and I got maybe one sickly rotation. Boo. Then some clicking and grinding. Pulled the plugs, same thing. Engine spins by hand. Cleaned all...

Mercruiser 470 choke staying open after warmed

Re: Mercruiser 470 choke staying open after warmed No, there's a cam, and the throttle linkage is indeed connected to the choke. It's only to hold the choke closed initially. The cam doesn't affect the throttle butterflies.

    Need help with torque specs/470

Can someone tell me the correct torque values for the exhaust manifold head bolts and manifold to Riser bolts ? I don't have access to my manual and only have a phone for Internet access . This is for my Merc 170 .

Could I have been driving around with this?

Found a broken valve spring at the end of last year. Finally getting around to replacing it. Any chance that this could have been going on for a while? The boat was running ok all last year--I did notice that it was having a hard time pulling me out of the water when skiing, but chaulked it...

Difference between 470 valve spring and Ford?

After finding a busted intake valve spring when winterizing my boat, I started looking for a replacement. I used Ford 460 parts for a head repair last year, but it appears the springs are different between the auto and marine apps in that a shield is on the marine version, but does not appear...

Glad I found this before spring...

Re: Glad I found this before spring... yeah, I'm not too worried about that part. I think this is the second time in 2 years that I've dodged a bullet with this head. Still wondering what caused this. This isn't helping my fear of a catastrophic engine failure leaving me stranded. Took me...

Glad I found this before spring...

Finally got around to winterizing the boat last week (I actually STILL thought about taking it out that day). Have had a leak at the exhaust manifold/riser junction because of a bad surface on the mani, so I had planned on machining it before spring. Got it started with a bit of difficulty...
