    All control boxes from 73 to 95 used the red plug.----No idea what that ty-wrap does or what purpose it serves.

    How did you determine that VRO is bad?-----They are easy to take apart for inspection / repair.----And new ones are over priced in my opinion.

    More pictures of the cables and where they connect makes it easy to explain.----If that is on the shift cable it might be easy to explain that ty-wrap.

    ??----No need to rush out and replace the control box.----Some simple trouble shooting can be done.----That is an improved control box and better than 1978 original !!-----There are adjustment on these things.---Stop and take your time.----First time owning a boat ??

    Simple testing gets you the results.----So does the solenoid click when you put 12 volts to the choke wire on the terminal strip, yes or no ?

    Just a matter of time as severe corrosion is happening.----Material will fall off around the cast iron cylinders.

    That appears in more than 1 Yamaha product.-----Got a 2005 model 90 for free from a dealer , motor was declared scrap due to water jacket corrosion.----And not from salt water either.

    Use a jumper wire directly to the choke wire on the terminal block.----Choke should click.
