    Model # of your motor ?-----Most V-4 Johnson / Evinrude motors were 20" from about 1970 to last production.-------Some were also 25" but not that many , on inland waters.------The 25" models were popular for offshore type boats,------Have a 1998 Johnson V-4 in 25" myself.

    All motors sound great running on a hose !!---Means little.-----Sounds like it is running on 2 of 4 cylinders.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" on each plug lead , yes or no ?---Motor needs 4 things to run.----Spark at the right time.----Correct amount of fuel.----Compression in the cylinders...

    Really , using a piece of carboard ??----I have the " special " tool.------You can buy a premium tool online too.-----But get the wife to help.----2 knives to hold the brushes in place.----Easy as can be.

    If it was run with no oil it needs to come apart for inspection.----I sold a gearcase years ago to some folks that drained the gearcase in the fall.----Forgot to fill it in spring.----Gearcase locked up after 15 minutes !-----They were happy to pay for their mistake.

    The rectifier has to do with charging the battery.-----But check all wiring.----Wiring can be confusing to many people.

    Every body has different standards and budgets I suppose.------Parts motors like that are plentiful in some areas.----Often free !

    Well ---#3 is often the first one to suffer.___-find / correct the cause.--Inspect all parts.------Install a new O/S piston now.-----If you keep running it it will suffer major damage.-----These motor need a new impeller every 2 or 3 years.

    Take it apart for inspection.----Was there water in it ?-----Install a seal kit if all gears / bearings survived this event.

    This kind of problem resulted from-( 1 ) too much torque on the nut---(2 ) trying to start a stubborn motor with impact gun or electric drill.-----Instead of trouble shooting , some folks just start using the wrong methods on a precision / fine motor !!!
