got a question about a future V6 to V8 repower...

Did some checking on the Michigan Prop website.... For a 23 pitch (3 blade alu) largest diameter is 14"...so not sure if that would work... On the Cobra the lower gear ratios are all the same, any change is done in the upper, so if that didn't work I'd have to get a V-8 upper gear unit.

Something to Think of While Towing a Boat

And it’s only been that way since…2004 lol! Roller trailer & very steep hill up from the boat ramp hence the extra back up of the chain/turnbuckle/hook. Our street is elevated 80 ft above sea level and the ramp obviously is sea level so there are steep hills all around here unlike most of Long...

got a question about a future V6 to V8 repower...

OK seriously thinking of re-powering my old boat over next winter, from the 4.3 V6 to the 5.7 Vortec. Question is, the Cobra drive system I am using (I have a good original drive and a good spare) uses a 1:68:1 ratio. Will this work well with a V8 if I go to a larger pitch prop? I had used both...

    Trailer Brakes or Not

As far as the banging of the surge actuator and replacement of wheel cylinders, for one thing not all surge actuators bang, I have a Tie Down model 66 on my trailer that I installed way back in 2004 and it has never banged on stop/starts, there is a built in damper that works well, you can...

mercruiser 140 low compression & cracked exhaust manifold

also make sure to clean out the head bolt threads with solvent, a thread chaser and compressed air. They tend to get crudded up with raw water cooled engines. Make sure all your head bolts will thread all the way in before installing the head. That will assure proper torque readings.

What is this sound on Mercruiser 4.3, Alpha One?

best way to tell is get a mechanic's stethoscope, I found a noise using mine that sounded like an engine knock coming from a rubber covered flapper on my Cobra...drove me crazy after my top end rebuild till I found it.....thing was I had to change to a different exhaust design at the same time...

Another v6 to v8 swap question

I’m thinking that the OP is saying that his motor mount pads are long enough for the V6 but not for the 4” longer V8 so he needs to extend them forward. Some boats like mine were built to take either engine so the original pads are long enough. I know the rear mount spacing is the same for the...

Surge brakes lasted 1200 miles of highway, whats wrong

It was reported on salt water boating boards like the hulltruth a number of times, Kodiak then revised the material used and problem solved.

    2006 Volvo 5.7 osi-d crank no start

Yep double check your head bolts. Any brackets on the rear of the cyl heads? Maybe post up some pix. As much as it was difficult to get the intake off on mine once the head bolts were out (that took a 1/2” electric impact gun) the cyl heads came right off. I just slid a long breaker bar in a...

Surge brakes lasted 1200 miles of highway, whats wrong

Agreed in using the IR temp gun that will tell the tale if one or more brakes are sticking. I know on some disc brakes there was an issue with non stainless backing plates causing the pads to swell and drag on the rotors. If they are Kodiak brakes with painted steel backing plates for the pads...

Surge brakes not working. Where to start

With drum brakes it is possible to design them so they don’t activate enough in reverse to stop you from backing up. Free backing drum brakes they are called. Disc brakes can’t be made that way so you need some type of solenoid or other mechanical lock out. In this case the first thing I’d do...

1990 4.3 vortec new motor water in oil

The orange coloring on the center electrodes suggests water getting in. Did your try cranking it with the plugs out to see if water cones out of the plug holes? Any rust on the electrodes? A good test Is to replace the manifold feed hoses with clear tubing and run the engine till good and hot...
