Locating leaks in Walker Bay tubes

this is our 'big' boat, 1988 FW 200 Horizon. Imron paint job done 10 years ago....

Locating leaks in Walker Bay tubes

I wish they did or else I would have put the air tubes on both. The 10' is way more stable than the 8' though...

Locating leaks in Walker Bay tubes

Here's our Walker Bay fleet. They have dock bumpers on them so they don't scratch our boat's Imron paint job! These boats are basically indestructible. We put the DF 2.5 Suzuki on the larger one as a water taxi. Great fun. The 10' on the right is 20 years old the 8' on the left is 14 years old.

If you can't find a trailer scale where you are located....

For the scales, whereabouts? Most of the later catalogs that FW has on their site don't list specific specs on the trailers but the last one they had for the Horizon 20' where they had that data listed the tandem axle with 4200 carrying capacity and 5000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Yet they...

If you can't find a trailer scale where you are located....

Nope. Had the foam out when I redid the deck 15 years ago. And it wasn’t waterlogged then. 1988 Four Winns 200 Horizon. 20’9” When I launch the boat I’ll weigh the trailer same way then I can figure out how much the boat weighs… I thought it was at least 3500 lbs but it seems to be more like...

If you can't find a trailer scale where you are located....

I was able to get an estimate of what mine weighs using a Sherline scale, with a 0-5000 lb meter, and a wood block to rest the scale on. So for my single axle trailer with 6,000 axle, 12" brakes, 225/75-15 D load range tires, I got 4650 on the axle, and 410 on the tongue. I don't have much...

    Your Worst Nightmare.-

Definitely these will all work: Evinrude gasket sealer Merc Perfect Seal Permatex Aviation I have used mostly the Evinrude stuff on my outdrive bolts and this thing has been in salt water for 6 months a year, for at least 16 seasons. The bolts that I used it on all come out. When I did my top...

mercruiser 140 low compression & cracked exhaust manifold

Having repaired my original old motor (1988) successfully, I know these jobs can be done, but truthfully if you want to be able to boat without anxiety and inconvenient break downs, with a drivetrain that old, replacing with new or late model remanufactured makes a lot of sense. It's hard to...

Chips in hull of new boat. Used it twice. How serious?

I'd look carefully at the trailer to see if a bracket is causing the chips. All it takes is a bracket in the wrong place or a bolt head or threads sticking out too far to do that.

    Cleaning Manifolds & Risers

I used Permatex Aviation as per what the Barr Marine tech told me. Worked out fine 4 seasons later no leaks.

88 mercruiser 4.3 low compression and water in oil.

have you ever noticed the euphemisms that are common in boat deals.... "I was told" suggests I should have looked further "I recently acquired" means I am reluctant to admit I actually bought this thing... We've all done it at least once.... but learned a lot in the process.... in this case...

mercruiser 140 low compression & cracked exhaust manifold

It's a 1969, do you know if it still has the original engine? Sounds like a bad exhaust leak. Exhaust manifolds crack because people don't winterize their engines. What are your plans for this boat? It looks to be in good shape besides the engine. If you want it to be reliable I'd be thinking...

Chips in hull of new boat. Used it twice. How serious?

Gel coat isn’t really waterproof that’s why some boats are prone to blisters.

    Cleaning Manifolds & Risers

If those are the metal Volvo gaskets I recall reading that they said to use a Permatex copper spray sealer on them. See what the instructions say.

Locating leaks in Walker Bay tubes

Those boats are made of a rigid plastic (like ropolene) and the air tubes were an add on. We have 2 Walker Bay boats a 10’ & an 8’. We thought of getting those air tubes but even when they first came out the reviews weren’t that good lots of leak complaints. So we never wound up buying the tubes...

    Divorced choke

You know that as long as the spring is in good shape & the choke the linkage is clean those chokes can work just fine. I still have one on mine. Only drawback is if the engine warms up very slow it takes much longer to open than the electric. The well type responds directly to engine temp. Just...

Marine Power 454 Engines Fuel Pump

It would be at the front corner, passenger side if it were in a car, starboard side in a boat. I think you could use a mechanical pump up to model year 1990, 91 and up you had to use electric.

Marine Power 454 Engines Fuel Pump

Yes to mechanical pumps if you can use them. The one I replaced a few years ago was 30 years old! No wiring, no oil pressure switches, etc. Works just fine with a carb engine.

Chips in hull of new boat. Used it twice. How serious?

I agree I would get that fixed you don’t want water in the laminate. Looks more like trailer damage than beaching, beaching not as likely to take off chunks like that.
