    Mercruiser 160/165 cracked block

    Check for rot which is common in boats of this age. Possible if stored inside it is not rotten but that is the first thing to check before you put much time and money into it. Drill in bottom of transom stringers around the engine if they are ok plug as mentioned .

    The motor is smoked... Things dont like getting that hot. It isnt going to hurt to try and start at this point, because he is screwed already.... If 2&3 have low comrpession head gasket is probably messed up. Id make sure no water is in cyclinder before trying to start.

    140 or 160 thermostat. Does 20 degrees make a difference?

    Ive used both temps in my engines in the past. thinking on the 140 is you will crystalize less salt out of brackish/salt water with a 140 vs a 160 if raw water cooled. I suspect what you are seeing with the temp rise is either water pump impeller needs replacement, or thermostat isnt opening...

    Im pretty sure you need to advance it 6 degrees to 8 degrees before. Your crank shaft will be turning clockwise viewed from front of engine.

    Did u check the gimbal bearing while drive was off? Unless you got water in bellows ujoints last forever… not sure with the cone clutch on your drive but makes sense it would take a turn-or two to seat the cone clutch

    15 minutes to pull the drive one can do it easily, two people may take longer… shouldn't leak at all on the trailer unless water is coming over the gunnel.

    Yes if it sat uncovered orhad water in it yes is possible can tell much from the video need to get in there with a camera mirror etc and see exactly where water is coming in other possibilities from shift bellows and exhaust pipe

    Others will disagree but I am a big fan of 4 blades, on my last two boats improved holeshot stern lift and lowered planning speed. I dont have a big enough boat or go far enough to comment of fuel efficency at crusie etc.

    If the carb has a choke it is a mercarb. If it has no choke it is a TKS. Both share a common lineage from the rochester 2 jet. If it is a mercarb they have two different style accelerator pumps, you have to get the right one or order a kit that has both ( Mikes carb parts sells them) on a 3.0...

    I think i depends on the engine . My old 3.0 not long , newer boat has 5.0 takes a bit longer havent timed it but long enough it always makes me worry a bit. I would think there are several gallons in the block , BBC that you have would likely take more to fill the block

    If you can find merc service bulletin 89-9 it covers ddis . Yeah no need for base timing mode, just check for 8 btdc with a timing light. advance is Supposed to be 26 degrees at 2600 rpm for 34 degress total i had one on my 91 searay never had an issue in 20 years with it. Timing never moved...

    You need to take the drive off split it and pressure test it. Could be from water pump base seal, shift shaft or upper driveshaft seal
