    Some will argue------I would take the starter apart for cleaning / inspection / ohm check on the armature.-----Should read infinity on a digital meter.-----If flywheel spins slow there will not be a spark generated.----All the cranking damages these starters !

    Parts for these units used to be expensive.----Not much call for them today.----One site appears to have this stuff at half price.----Wanting to clear them put I guess.----I used to work on these on a regular basis years ago.---Not too much lately.----Have a number of parts motors on hand.

    I would take the lower unit off.----Inspect the shift wire.----It may have been tampered with.

    Do an ohm check on the electro magnets.-----Should read the same.----Sounds like the tab on the forward spring broke.----Be an easy fix here.

    Waste of time to check spark that way !!!-----Make a spark tester.---Piece of carboard or plywood.----Glue wire on it with 1/4" gap between them.----Then clip on end to the block and one end into sparkplug boot.----Simple as simple can be.

    Looks like a 1965 or 1966.----Do a complete evaluation of this engine before spending any beer tokens.----Do a complete evaluation ( mystery repair on transom ? ) of the " free " boat.----Why do you want to start with a carburetor kit ???

    What HP ?----I say you have weak spark !----Or plug wires reversed.-----Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" or more on a test device , yes or no ?

    There is the electric primer valve ( red lever ) , and that is NOT a pump.----The little pump is a vapor extraction pump.

    ??----The motor needs oil to live !----Why would you try running with less oil ?-----Just another example of folks not understanding the concept of 2 strokes and lubrication.----What trouble shooting has been done ?

    You have to take lower unit apart to check shifter and forward gear.-----There is no adjustment features on these.
