1988 Merc 5.7L Mag - Alpha One Lower/Upper Drive shaft seals

Hey. I bought a new SEI Lower Unit for my Alpha One. All was great until I hit a rock at low speed. Well they've fixed it and it's on the way back to me (replaced some bearings, gears, prop shaft & the case). When I removed the lower I noticed some diluted oil on the vertical drive shaft...

    Merc 5.7 350 mag '88 - Spark plug 5 & 6 carbon build up.. Others look good

Hey. I pulled the plugs so I could rotate the flywheel easier to measure the run-out (.004"), before installing my new coupler. Anyway.. I noticed plugs 5 & 6 which are across from each other and 2nd from the rear, look different then the rest. There isn't a HUGE amount of carbon build up, but...

How to support 1988 Merc 5.7L Mag on wood while replacing the coupler?

The Mastercraft Engine leveler works great, purchased from Canadian Tire. The new coupler is installed, new rear mounts as well. The flywheel cover & flywheel look brand new. I don't see any rust on on the motor at all. There's still paint left on the ring gear. Flywheel runout was .004" Ben

Merc 5.7 Mag 1988 LH rotation, manually turned RH by mistake... Did I break anything?

Hey. I feel like a complete dumba**, but I had a brain fart. After removing the plugs to check the flywheel run-out today with my dial-indicator. I turned the motor 5 or 6 times CW (RH) instead of CCW (LH) very slowly. This is looking at the rear of the engine. FYI - A normal 5/8" plug socket...

How to support 1988 Merc 5.7L Mag on wood while replacing the coupler?

Thanks all, I'm in Georgian Bay (just off Lake Huron), Ontario with fresh water, the motor only has 850hrs. The boat has been in dry dock for the last 12 years anyway and only put in the water when used. There is not a spec of rust ANYWHERE on the motor! I never thought the oil pan would be...

How to support 1988 Merc 5.7L Mag on wood while replacing the coupler?

Hey. I pulled the engine today and turned it around in the boat, I blocked it up on some 6x6's and 2x6's. I've searched high and low and all the photos I can find have the motor sitting on the flywheel cover "feet". Obviously the flywheel cover comes off, so how does one support the rear while...

Gimbal Bearing Install issues - 1988 Merc 350 mag alpha one

Thanks all it makes me feel a bit better. BT Doctur - What I used was a tool that uses the bearing driver mounted on the alignment bar inserted into the coupler to "aid" in installation. Like this, after doing this, I wish I just used the driver without the aid of trying to use the coupler...

Gimbal Bearing Install issues - 1988 Merc 350 mag alpha one

Hi all, I bought my merc tools from whoya on eBay. Seem like quality pieces. A few weeks ago I spent quite a few hours aligning the engine on a boat I just bought. Had to lower the front of the engine about 1/4". Alignment bar went in smooth as butter. Until I rotated the engine! I could barely...

Brand new Needles/Floats and the new Plastic Float is getting stuck open!

Re: Brand new Needles/Floats and the new Plastic Float is getting stuck open! I used this site: Parts Catalog | Mercury Marine With my serial # 7198630. The floats/needles/gaskets were all ordered from a Mercury Dealer. Part # on both packages is 1395-9293 But I do agree I noticed this as...

Brand new Needles/Floats and the new Plastic Float is getting stuck open!

Hey. I took my carbs off they have never been removed, as fuel was coming out the overflow when primed. The inside of both carbs were clean as a whistle, no varnish at all (I've always use fuel stabilizer in the fall) and also buy gas with no ethanol. These are Tillotson carbs: 6517A14, BA4A...

    1983 Mercury 50HP 4 cylinder 16V @ WOT WITH a regulator (rectifier was replaced)

Hi, NOTE: My motor originally had a rectifier only, it now has a regulator (rectifier was removed). I installed it yesterday. Even with the regulator it's pushing 16.1V at WOT. It seems not everyone is reading my entire post which is understandable since I wrote wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much...
