1986 Mercruiser 140 Elec. problem

Can anyone help me with this problem?

Battery was dead on the water last weekend. I got a jump start and it ran just fine to get it home, but dead again once I shut it off. Hooked up my volt meter to the battery and it shows about 12.6v when not running and 12.5v when the engine is...

    belt replacement

I have a 1986 Mercruiser 140 h.p. 4-cylinder. I haven't had to do it yet, but was looking at the belt. It looks like if I want to replace the belt, I have to remove one of the motor mounts. Does that sound right? If so, any ideas on how to support the motor while I'm doing it?

Thanks!

    hydraulic line

I've been having trim problems, and when I went to check it, I found that one of the braided metallic lines to the power trim was leaking hydraulic fluid. I went to the boat store and ordered it but it won't be in until Saturday morning. I'm just wondering, is there any trick to replacing...

    trim problem

Hi all, my Alpha-One outdrive has issues when I try to trim up. It seems to take a very long time and work very hard when raising the outdrive. It moves down just fine, but when I try to put it all the way up (to trailer it) it takes much longer than it used to. Does this sound like a...

    trim issues

Saturday I docked my boat, trimmed the outdrive all the way up (according to the gauge) and pulled it out of the water. My buddy yelled in time for me to stop...because the outdrive was still all the way down!! Now I know to visually make sure that it is up, but does anyone know what could...

    OK to Comission?

When is OK to take your boat out of hibernation? I live in Kansas City, and it's been in the 60s during the day here, fairly consistently. However, occasionally at night it still does get down below freezing. Would it be OK to go ahead and Comission the boat, or do I need to wait longer?<br...

    What to call it?

Hi all, last Summer I bought a used Chapparal open-bow, and have been having lots of fun with it. My question is this: when someone says they have an 18' boat, what exactly does that mean? Mine is either 17'8" (if measured along the side) or 16' if measured from the tip of the bow to the...

    drive bellows

Could someone please give me a two-cent explanation of what the drive bellows are? I bought a used boat last Summer, and in the process of having it winterized, was told that the drive bellows are bad and need to be replaced, to the tune of about $200. Just looking to satisfy my own curiosity...

    Winterizing

Hi all, I'm a first time boat owner, and am preparing for the cold midwest winter ahead. In addition to getting my motor 'winterized,' I've noticed that in some posts they also mention 'shrink-wrapping.' Is this just what it sounds like? Wrapping the entire boat to keep out the elements...

    flag etiquitte

Does anybody know the proper etiquitte for displaying a flag from the side of a house? I'm buying one to display, however most that I've looked at are fixed...that is, they aren't capable of going to half-mast. Is that disrespectful? Should I just not display the flag if I'm unable to display...

    temp gauge

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot a temperature gauge? I have a 140 hp Mercruiser I/O. I bought the boat about a month ago, and the seller said that he recently had a new temperature sensor installed, which, by the looks of it, appears to be true. I've looked at the obvious things...wires all...

    throttle problem

Hi, I have a 1986 Chaparral 17'8" Bowrider with a Mercruiser 4cyl, 140hp I/O...my first boat. I'm wondering, is there any way to "center" the throttle control lever? I took it out yesterday, and it seemed that neutral was way off center. To put it in neutral, I had to actually put the lever...

    won't start

    Hi, I'm trying to diagnosis my 1986 Mercruiser 140 h.p. 4 cyl I/O, because it won't start.

The symptoms: It will crank for one second, then the "click click click" of the solenoid takes over.

I think the battery is ok. It charges fully on the charger, and the voltmeter...

    fuel leakage

Hi, I've recently bought my first boat, a 1986 Chaparral open-bow with a 140 h.p. 4 cyl. Mercruiser I/O. I took it out to the lake today, filling it up with gas on the way (removed the fuel hose after the first time it clicked off.) At the lake we had starting problems (fun fun) and had to go...

    wheel bearings

Does anyone have advice on where I can find instructions WITH diagrams on how to repack trailer wheel bearings? I've never done it, and just bought a used boat/trailer.

Thanks
Brian
