Post Card from The Hideout

I am so glad to live here, in the USA, in this time, that it sometimes makes me weep with joy.

    Ooops!

An honest man is being tailgated by a stressed-out woman on a busy
boulevard. Suddenly, the light turns yellow, just in front of him. He does the honest thing, and stops at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.
The...

WOW!! Sasha Cohen is in peak form!

I follow women's figure skating. Have since I fell in love with Carol Heiss nearly 60 years ago.

In the women's short program this afternoon Sasha Cohen (USA) gave one of the finest performances I have ever seen, maybe the very best. Great panache!

The free skate is on ESPN...

Win a free lure! Name JB's new toy.

I name all of my toys.

Shotgun is "Elizabeth II"
Tractor (Kubota) is "Big Orange".
Boston Whaler Montauk 17 is "Sunshine III"
Boston Whaler Tender 11' is "WeeBit"

I recently traded my ML320 (Shining Armor) for a newer ML430. She needs a name.

She...

    Dad-gummit!! NBC News bias.

At the end of a report on the siege of Al Qaeda terrorists in Pakistan, the reporter said, "The world is waiting to see if this is a breakthrough in the war on terror. . . or just another false alarm." (italics mine). The italicized words dripped with disdain.

This is, of course...

Hey, Skinnywater! ML430 throttle tip in.

I traded my beloved ML320 ('98, 130,000 miles, needed some expensive replacement parts) for the only vehicle I ever drove that I wanted more than the ML320. . .a '99 ML430 (56K, 100K warranty, Bose/CD, ESP, Sunroof, 5K tow package, one owner who I interviewed). $24K, less $12K for my ML320.<br...

    Lightning and phones/lines

Couple weeks ago, during a T'storm, my modem (dial up) got killed. I assume it was a lightning blip on the line. All 3 phones in the house seem unaffected.

Took it to my Conehead, who replaced the modem and checked out the 'puter. Cool? Not.

Got home, hooked 'er up, did a...

    Shipping an outboard.

I have sold my Johnny 9.9 4 stroke to a fellow in CA. Now I need to ship it to him.

I would like to find a shipper who will crate it and deliver it, but the quotes I get on the net are all over the place, from $65 (FedEx, no packaging) to $271 (OTR freight). No shipper offers the...

    Apology

Sorry to offend. I had no idea that it would. :(

I guess we all can make a mistake now and then, but do we have to throw a tantrum when we get poofed??

    Diesel engine technology?

I haven't kept up very well with modern Diesel engine technology.

I have owned four Diesel cars; three Mercedes and one Oldsmobile. The Olds doesn't really count because the engine was a converted gasoline engine and a disaster. I am a big fan of diesel economy and longevity, but the...

Do you have a Repair Manual for your engine(s)?

I really wanted this to be a poll, but that is not an option in this forum.

"Vote" anyway. Select one from 1-5 and one from 6-8.

1. I have and use an OEM Manual.

2. I have and use an aftermarket (Seloc, Clymer) Manual.

3. I have no manual, but I don't...

    The redhead.

A young redhead goes into the doctor's office
and says that her body hurts wherever she touches it.
Impossible," says the doctor. "Show me."
She takes her finger and pushes her elbow and
screams in agony. She pushes her knee and
screams. Everywhere she touches...

    What makes you happy/smile?

"Friendships brighten our lives by dividing our sorrows and multiplying our joys."

I don't know who originally said that, but I believe it.

We have divided up a lot of major sorrows here lately, and shared some of our lives' annoyances.

We need more joys to...

    New political stereotype: "NASCAR Dads".

Sounds better than "Redneck" or "Radical Conservative" to me. They seem to be negative labels. It also seems negative to me to be labeled a "Truck driver with a Confederate flag on it".

Saw a bit on TV about this.

Supposedly, NASCAR Dads are rural, adult white males who...

Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

I've about had it with my @#$%^&* ISP. S-l-o-w, plus pauses in service that last for 5 seconds to several minutes. Sometimes they just cut me off altogether. I have a backup ISP, but they aren't a lot better. :(

I spend a lot of time online, and my attitude is not what it ought to...

    Brain work-out

At exactly the same moment a 747 leaves Kennedy airport for Paris and a Concorde leaves Orly for New York. The 747 cruises at 500mph, the Concorde at 1300mph.

Winds are westerly at 25mph, the earth is rotating at 1,000mph.

Eventually, the two planes pass one another.<br...
