    1973 Mercury 500 reverse?

    When I first bought this motor it would go in and out of reverse just fine. But after I put the linkage on from the controls it is stuck in forward. I cannot even get it to go with a screwdriver. It is stuck completely forward and will not budge. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks
