    Caulking Release

Lectro88, you are correct. This might make an older man out of an old man. I think some of it may have been 3m 5200 or similar. See my drivewayboater2 and other comments. I now have it hanging with 4 straps from the ceiling. As I look at it though, I think I will add 2 more straps between the...

    Caulking Release

I think you were dead on. That is the area that broke loose, I think. Until I get the cap higher into the air, I won't know for sure, but the cracking noise was coming from that area when it let loose. Doesn't appear to be damaged, but I won't know for sure until I raise it some more. See below...

    Caulking Release

Thanks for your reply. I did check, but found nothing. The rear was stuck with caulking. It finally let loose with some hydraulic jack persuasion.

    Caulking Release

Yep, I know that you can ruin fiberglass with too much heat. I'll be re-glassing that area to some extent anyway, so it should be strong again. Not sure that it's damaged, but will soon know, I think.

    Caulking Release

Thanks for your comment. That's what I did. Up until that, I was using a round cornered putty knife. The oscillator helped, but it was still stuck. I finally used two hydraulic jacks and also a very small block and tackle hooked to the rear of the port side where it was stuck. The hydraulic...

    Caulking Release

Moving along with my top cap removal on a 1977 16' Chrysler Pro Bass Runner. All rivets and screws are now removed. Both sides are fully free and moveable. All four (tri-hull) corners are caulked. I have the rear starboard corner released, but the rear port is stuck in one area. I've worked at...

Multiple layers of fiberglass and laminating PE resin

Thanks for your help. This is my first go at this. I really appreciate your comments. I worked like the devil trying to get the steering supports and carpet loose in that area. Problem was nuts on the back of bolts with virtually no access. Ended up cutting them all loose. Was going to add new...

Multiple layers of fiberglass and laminating PE resin

Found screw-in eye bolts that will hold 380 pounds, so 4 of those should work for the suspension of the top cap in the garage. Sure beats drilling through the attic floor joists. Pressure washed the boat today and it actually cleaned up much better than I expected. Pulled the rub rail and...

Multiple layers of fiberglass and laminating PE resin

Work is progressing. All of the deck lids are now glassed and ready for carpet on one side and renewed gel on the other. Basically had to waterproof the old deck lids with new wood and some glass. Still need to touch-up some yet, but they are 98% done with glass at this point. Motor is removed...

    Sewing machine reco for canvas

That said, you can get a Singer HD new for about $199.00 or maybe less on sale. I have sewn auto upholstery on a Kenmore of similar style and quality with success. Frustrations? You betcha, but it can be done if you are patient and willing. I'm thinking you might get through 4 layers of...

    Power Trim (A-45194A13) Question

Thanks merk850 - Pump it disconnected and the 800 Thunderbolt motor is now off the boat at my Merc repair center waiting for a long-delayed rebuild/repair/etc. Now the real work starts on my end by taking the cap off the boat - 1977 Chrysler Pro Bass Runner 16'.

    Power Trim (A-45194A13) Question

I'm in the process of lifting my 80 HP Mercury Thunderbolt off my bass boat in order to get the cap of the boat off for floor and maybe transom repairs. I need to disconnect the hydraulic lines from the power trim pump so I can feed them out to the motor prior to lifting the motor from the boat...

    Sewing machine reco for canvas

reco= recommend I think. There are lots of machines that will sew canvas, vinyl, etc. I suppose you have a few things to keep in mind. You probably need a commercial machine for long-term usage. You either need a walking-dog foot or a needle feed machine. You want a machine that allows you to...

Multiple layers of fiberglass and laminating PE resin

Thanks Froggy. I purchased my resin from a well known boat resin supplier, but the resin was old (maybe 2 years, or so) and I thought that might be part of the issue. However, the container was clearly marked as unwaxed. Since I used this old resin for the under-carpet boat lids, etc., I figured...

Multiple layers of fiberglass and laminating PE resin

Years ago I was spray painting either in my unattached garage or outside (forgot) that was at least 50 feet from the house and one day I looked up at an upstairs window air conditioner. To my surprise, I saw yellow paint on the air conditioner filter. That taught me a lesson about airborne...

Multiple layers of fiberglass and laminating PE resin

Lectro88, I'll continue to post as work progresses. With Indiana winter coming and my work is in the garage where my furnace is, I have to be very careful with dust (furnace off basically). But I'll be working both inside and out as weather permits. Grind and cut outside, scratch head inside...

Multiple layers of fiberglass and laminating PE resin

Thanks Scott. I think I'm ok now with the unwaxed resin. Why mine did not get tacky, I don't know. Maybe because it was old resin; 18-24 months old likely. Anyway, you can read my post below and thanks for your reply. I too am a grumpy old guy. Maybe that's why one of my favorite movies is...

Multiple layers of fiberglass and laminating PE resin

I have started my project (perhaps ###-backwards), by laminating new wood and in some cases reinforcing existing wood on the various deck lids, two live-well lids, three storage lids, and one long rod holder lid. All of this work, so far, will be covered with carpeting down the road. I will...
