    My first boat (project)

The good news is that most boat manuals are pretty worthless, anyway. The place to start is to post some pictures of your boat, along with details like what sort of propulsion (outboard vs. I/O, for example) it has.

Mercruiser 5.0 TKS vs 4.3 MPI

We had a Dodge Onmi 024 the first year they were made, 1979. These were the 'sporty' version of the Omni family. It was a nice looking little car, but it had a weak little engine (1.7L 70hp, I think) that left you wanting a bit more. It was a cute little car, though, and still fun to drive, even...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

Depends how smooth is smooth... CSM will be better, but won't really be what I'd call smooth. Fairing and sanding isn't really that bad, if you don't splooge too much stuff all over.

    Lead Paint in 1976

These are what I have used. Really easy and almost impossible to screw up...

    Lead Paint in 1976

Yeah, they sell those kits at ACE Hardware or many big box stores. Test you boat and gain some piece of mind.

4.3 Oil Drain System and Timing Cover

Google “oil drain kit mercruiser 5.7” if you see what it is. Iboats may sell them, but their search feature is horrible and I was not able to find it.

4.3 Oil Drain System and Timing Cover

Every year when I am putting the boat to bed for winter (in fact, just two days ago), I curse myself for not installing a drain hose on the oil pan when I had the engine out. Stupid mistake that I will never repeat. The suction method works, but it's not that quick and you have a pump to clean...

    Best adhesive remover?

I never found anything that loosened or dissolved the old carpet glue. I tried all kinds of solvents, including the 3M Adhesive Remover (what I refer to as 'the nuclear option' since it works better than anything), without success. I ended using a grinder and abrasive disk. I went thru a bunch...

homebuilders / construction guys lend me your ear

This is the key for me, too. Standard is much easier if you have railings to deal with.

Winterizing engine & drive removed from boat

Normally, you'd want to detach the large curved hose that goes to the water circulating pump on the front of the engine. It can hold up to a quart of water.

Kinda tough to read on iPad.

Lag Bolt Hole Striped (Engine Mount To Hull)

Yeah, fill the 1/4" with dowel, or Marine-tex or PC-11 epoxy and use it for a while. You should find out fairly soon if it's going to hold up. If not, then you can plan your winter project.

    Forum update

I remember the switch to the last version of VB and what a mess that was, and this change has gone so much better. I'm really impressed how functional everything is, especially given that the board moved to a different platform. It's been pretty impressive to see. I'm happy to learn new ways to...

    Forum update

Thanks, aspeck. I normally don't use the new topics feature, as I don't follow all the forums, just a handful, but I may have to start. I do hope the future includes some way to look at a topics in a forum and know which ones I'm caught up on. Thanks again!

Gear Oil, change or OK to check?

The only thing I'd be concerned about with those few hours would be if water got into the gear lube. Pulling the lower drain valve and letting some dribble out should tell you if there are any water intrusion problems. If you don't see water or milky-colored lube coming out, you're probably OK...

    Forum update

Well, I'm still loving the new forum look and functionality and I say a big THANK YOU to all the mods and developers and admins that have been working to make the changes. iBoats doing away with the VB software is the best thing to happen so far in 2020! I appreciate the tip for identifying...

Lag Bolt Hole Striped (Engine Mount To Hull)

As a 2005 boat, I'm wondering if your stringers/mounts are fiberglass filled with foam, with a block of wood glued/epoxied under the upper surface of mount, to give the lag screws something to bite into. If that is the case, the mount could be more or less hollow under the block of wood. (I...
