I have a 2001 115 hp Merc (Yamaha) 4 stroke that has succumb to ethanol based fuel contamination (It is next to impossible to get anything but E10 in my area. It ran well for several years, but ...) Has anyone tried the OTC 7000A fuel injector cleaner ? Opinions ?? With an outboard, all you...

    Decisions, decisions !

I know, Starcraft boats are for fishing, but with 5 grandkids, we do a lot of tubing ! I am getting ready to finish installing my custom made ski/tube pole and I need some "sage" advice ! Originally, I was going to put the lower mount through the sides of the splashwell. Well, that is only...

Which aluminum alloy and what to use for bonding aluminum

If you have been following my other thread Working under the back deck/splashwell you know I had to resort to cutting the ends of the vertical panel that goes under the rear casting deck. I want to add some tabs that I can screw the panel to when I re-install it. What is the proper alloy of...

RANT !! Why do they build them that way ?????

So I had to remove the seat base from the rear casting deck of my 2002 Starfire 170. The other seat vases are held down by 6 #12 2" wood screws. Perhaps nit the best, especially when the floor start to go. But the seat base on the rear beck uses 6 #12 2" MACHINE SCREWS. Yes, that plywood...

    Working under the back deck/splashwell

I have a 2002 Starfire 170 that is going to get splashed for the first time this year, "real soon", but of course there is some maintenance left from last year. The gas gauge quit working. Looking through the access port in the splashwell (not sure what good that really is) I can see the...

    Source for hardware

I have a 2001 Starfie 170LE (see signature) with a small problem. The latch for one of the side rod locker doors has frozen up. I managed to get the door open by drilling out the pop rivets but I need to replace the lock/latch mechanism. The outside has a rectangular recessed backing plate. The...

    Front hood latch rattle

So I have had my Mercury 115 4 Stroke for over 10 years and have not come up with a good solution. The front hood latch rattles when it is closed.. It is a very ringy noise and make you want to think there is something wrong with the engine. Suggestions ?

Better than SeaFoam for 4 Stroke engines (especially EFI)

I have a 2001 Mercury 115 HP 4 stroke EFI (actually a Yamaha block and head). Classic weekend boat that get wet more often from rain than from lake water. Recommendation for BIG man PFD

I am about 275 and last time I got measured for a suit I was a 54 and had a 19" neck. I'm looking for a PFD that is my size so I won't feel squeezed into it like a sausage, so comfort is a priority. I also do some smooth water kayaking and an occasional tube ride. What do you other BIG use ?

    Fuel gauge stuck on full

Well, I am your classic weekend warrior, meaning the boat get wet from rain far more than from lake water ! This year, the fuel gauge on my Starfire 170 LE seems to be stuck on full. How do you go about diagnosing if it is the gauge or the sender ? If it is the sender how do you replace it ?

    Custom loungers or Wise ?

I have a 2002 Starcraft Starfire LE 170. When I bought it, it came with 3 fishing seats (why I didn't buy the 4th, I'll never know). They also had an option of a back-to-back lounger on the port side. Now a days, the boat spends more time give the grandkids boat and tube rides, 2 back-to-back...

    Cleaning/restoring/preserving Attwood seat bases

My Starcraft uses the Attwood seat bases and posts. The bases are cat aluminum and are looking pretty sad with a lot of corrosion. I placed 2 of them in bickets of vinegar (5% acetic acid) for about 2 weeks. It appears to have changed the corrosion (oxidation ?) black but really not removed...

    Getting water out flotation foam

So any one who has owned a boat that requires flotation knows that over time the foam under the floor tends to hold water. Every time I see an uncovered boat in storage I know that that the bilge is full of wet foam and the floor, stringers and transom are probably rotten. Prevention is the...

    Drilling Transom for Ladder Bracket

So I am freaking out about drilling a couple of holes in my transom for a ladder. Checking a non running outboard

I found what looks like a good deal on a 70 hp Johnson (no year) on Craig's List. The ad says Further inquiry got a similar response Is there anyway to do a compression check and determine if the problem is really in the lower unit or is it a blown rod/piston without completely removing the...

Won't pump from tank; Works on muffs !

2001 Mercury 115hp 4 stroke EFI So a couple of months ago, I bought a large plastic storage box and made a frame out of 2x4s to hold it so I can use it as my test tank. (Came out pretty decent for someone with no carpentry skills.) Yes, I am behind in my boating preparation, but today I filled...
